My A6 htpc actually plays things like L4D2 just fine--I installed it so I could play with a friend...and I think it was playing smoother on my HTPC than my (much older) gaming PC.
No real need for it but for $12 if you wanted some bonus graphics performance (talking out my ass here, but I would bet that the most benefit would come from the extra video RAM). You could just leave it sitting on a shelf until you have a mini-LAN party and need to use the htpc for an extra player since the little fan on here is probably too loud for media center use.

just make sure to get ddr3 1600 cl9 at a minimum. you'll play everything on 720p fine, and 1080p at med to med low depending on the game

It seems that there may be an overheating issue, as the computer crashes whenever I play a game, but not when do other non-taxing tasks.
