Comics are shipped in a sealed plastic bag with a double thick page (not cardboard) on one side. This does allow the comic to bend so if your postal person is a gorilla it may not arrive in pristine condition.

That being said I have gotten three subscriptions (36 issues) over the last year and except for one which had a slight cut, all have arrived in "mint" condition.

Yeah it's pretty much like a magazine subscription- they just start you and if you are mid-arc, you are mid-arc.
