Thinkpads generate a cult style passion in owners... most due to sturdy build quality, non-nonsense design, and fantastic keyboard/pointer inputs.
As far the quality, look at the facts. Thinkpads are actually much higher quality now than when with IBM, mainly because IBM stopped spending the innovation money. Lenovo has continued to spend a lot of money in development and innovation. Many independent studies have shown Thinkpad quality has actually risen since the IBM days and it was already very high then.
Anyone that can post dells or HPs are any where close to the build quality or reliability of a Thinkpad are just trolls or basing their posts on very little data.
Here is a quote I found on a WOW forum.

Here is the Lenovo T430 with settings set mainly to High or Ultra; I've included a FRAPS overlay so you can see the current framerate in the upper right:

And here is the Intel HD 4000, which is the integrated card the X230 would be coming with. The maximum resolution of the X230 is 1366x768, so that is what I captured at, and I lowered the settings until I reached a 30 fps minimum for you. (Running it at the same resolution and settings as the 5400m resulted in framerates of 10-12 fps in the same Stormwind location.) Shadow Quality and Multisampling level seem to impact performance the most.

As both of your laptop choices are coming with the same processor (2.6 GHz Core i5) and amount memory (4GB), these results should be very close to what you could expect on the actual machines your university will issue you.
But any how - I dont think Im gonna be buying this laptop, seems like a nice deal, but I just bought that Desktop from HP for $200 shipped that has built in Wifi and Bluetooth with a Quad Core Processor which I will be pairing with the video card that I currently use plus the 8gig of ram - only thing I gotta get is a nice monitor for under $100 and I will be set.
Ugh, really? Tax..... I thought this was a tax free deal
I've had my Thinkpad T500 for 4 years now and never had an issue with the HD or motherboard, save a fan error (common and easily repaired, even if I didn't have a warranty). I've also had them replace my keyboard (wear), screen (a couple of broken pixels, no big deal), DVD RW drive, and a damaged hinge (from when I damaged the corner of the laptop after dropping it a few times) under the warranty. I'll probably have them re-image my HD before the warranty is up, too.
The X230 has an IPS panel.
Whether you should get this or the X1 depends on your goal. The X1 is incredibly thin and light, but like all ultrabooks, the X1 makes compromises to get thin
Since I knew this would function as my primary computer, I purchased the Thinkpad Warranty, as my laptops tend to take a beating. I haven't had to use it much, however.
I do not game at all on my PC, just for Microsoft Office, Standard internet etc, programming, android SDK/emulator. No I don't usually put any large load on my PCs, but I've made up my mind after garbage HP laptops and settled on Thinkpads only
Whoever owns this laptop; hows the heat/fan speed? Also, trackpad? Thanks
