Vacuum = holds heat for longer.

Absolutely get the vacuum one over the other one. It should keep coffee hot/warm all day long... They're both french presses though, but that's the only coffee-centric detail about these. I can see these being great travel mugs for tea as well, especially loose-leaf since you have the french press plunger.

::sigh:: such a good deal, I bought two. One for me, one for her. We'll use it when one wants coffee and the other tea, or if she's not in a coffee mood that morning. Can't go wrong considering I was about to buy a single thermos without the french press part from Amazon for like $25.

Yes, it's a small french press in a travel mug. A couple of things to consider. If your friend wants more than a single serving, obviously this isn't for him. Also, with this set up the coffee stays in contact with grounds until you finish drinking. With a separate french press you pour it into a mug, thus grounds and coffee are no longer in contact. Some coffee aficionados won't like their coffee to stay in contact with the grounds for that long.

That's the biggest reason not to use this IMO. As a simple travel mug, this may work well, but if you leave the grounds in there with the hot water, it will continue to brew. Even another 5min of brewing will turn a good cup bad. Some people may not mind, but those people are better off pouring their Maxwell House into a regular travel mug anyway.


If your friend is interested in making better coffee (why else buy a french press?), just get him a regular french press. The only reason I would buy this is as a travel press to bring with you on trips, but even then, the press is the least of your concerns compared to beans and a grinder.


In terms of coffee quality, there's really no difference in quality between french presses. Taste is affected far more by bean, grind, and procedure than this one tool. This press [amazon.com] is something a lot of people use (same brand as the OP), it holds twice as much, and is only $5 more.
