Can this be connected to a USB port of a router?
I read that it converts video files that are accessed via the device, is there a way to prevent that since WDTV can handle most video files?
What are the advantages of hacking or installing ArchLinux on this device?

the software on your computer is for local access to the drives.
you can tell it to only convert when asked.
there is no simple local network access.
with archlinux you lose all pogoplug functionality, but you basically have a low powered linux box. now you can install local file server software and .etc.

Thanks for the info. Read that once you have your drives on their site, they can read/use your files as they please, which seems a little intrusive. Installing Linux may be the way to go, but doesn't look easy to set it up as a network file server.
I use it and some old flash drives to share files with a few friends.

So in an attempt to install lInux on my plug device, I ended up bricking it but I do remember takIng the backup of the boot stuff. Do you happen to know of any restore guide? Thanks
Sorry, I don't, but you want to ask in the following forum.
http://archlinuxarm.org/forum/index.php
My setup:
I have this exact unit with a 1TB drive hooked up to it sitting in my basement, hooked into my router. I never touch any of this.
My use:
I store all of my pre-converted (via handbrake) movie files on the pogoplug drive and I use the pogoplug app (or website) to stream my movies to any device I want anywhere that I have wifi. It hasn't really ever failed me.
I do NOT use the auto-conversion that the pogoplug can do. I turned that off. I manually convert all of my movies myself with handbrake. It has never had any problem streaming any of them unless I have a weak wifi signal where I am. It works over 3G as well as long as you have a good enough signal.
I also use this as a means to dump photos. Any time I add photos to my laptop, I have the PogoPlug backup software running which automatically copies those new pictures over to my pogoplug hard drive. I can then use the app or the website to send direct links to those photos to family and friends for them to view/download/whatever.
This is honestly one of the best little tech purchases I've made in a while.
