it is better if you don't like splinters. I have some older shovels that I painted the handles on to solve the spljnter issue. The handle is not an actual fiberglass or whatever it is but a wood core coverd by a layer of fiberglass so not quite as strong as the real deal. I used this shovel to remove a mini-rose bush and I heard so many cracks when I put some leverage on the handle I thought it was gonna break. For reference the wood handle one that I used to take out a tree stump didn't make so much noise
