depends on what you are trying to do. If you are happy with pop-up flash, yes this will help you improve a little bit more.
If you not happy by the nasty shadow the pop-up flash produces or one-directional light that it gives, this is not going to be much better. You need 430ex ii or better.

Bottom line, this one is just a bigger pop-up flash!

Honestly, I would just save up for either the 430EX II or the 580EX II. Even the first version of either would be better than this.

I really wouldn't. This only slightly better than the pop up flash. Go for at least the 430EX II If you can spare the bucks, the 580EX II.

So many misdirected comments in such little time...

This flash would be a huge upgrade to any Canon shooter wanting to keep their camera's weight low. Not only does it recycle flashes faster than the built in pop up, but it can bounce flash off the ceiling. If you've never bounced flash you should give it a shot. Add a small business card to shoot a little forward as well, and you get nice diffused light with catchlights in the eyes. It is vastly superior to the harsh direct light from the pop up.

I'm a Nikon shooter, and my small SB-400 (similar to this flash) is probably one of my better investments. I also have a SB-700 for heavier duty work, but the light weight and low cost of a small hot shoe flash is hard to beat. I think any Canon shooter would love to have this flash in the bag.

I don't mind having a flash, and I just saw that the 430 EX ii was 240 ish on Amazon so you get a much better flash. For me personally, the increase in price is justified since its something you replace often, if at all.

Just FYI you prolly cant use a cheap diffuser with this flash.

A much better flash, of course. But $240-ish on Amazon? It's $269, which is the same price it is every time I look (which isn't every day, but often enough). The camel sez it hasn't been under $254 since mid-2010.

It WAS available for around $240, even with tax, a few weeks back with the 20% off coupon at Staples, as long as you were willing/able to get the PM from Amazon. Perhaps the best bet at this point is to wait out a Canon refurb with the next 20% off/FS deal. I think most will still pay tax on that, but that still comes out to $210 or less in most states.

Agree with this post. My 430 is awesome though, and is worth it in the longer run if you can afford it.
