Unlike a previous poster I cannot recommend the book. Having seen the movie first (and loving it) reading the book was a let down. It's a fine story in it's own right but the book and the movie end up having very little in common.
This is easily one of the most underrated movies of the past 10 years. I throw up in my mouth whenever someone compares this to the Illusionist. It's like suggesting that Rocky V and Million Dollar Baby are in the same ballpark.

Think of this; if Nolan's "worst" movie is Insomnia, then you know he's on top of his game.
His best movie is still Memento.
I love "mind f**k" movies, not the stupid and aesthetically pleasing, i.e. Avatar.
Not quite, Inception was average at best. Not same caliber as Memento, Insomnia, Prestige.
I thought the plot was pretty good and the visual effects complemented the movie quite well.
The concept was quite fresh (unless it was a re-make of some foreign movie), You don't see those very much, especially when Hollywood is either about action, horror, comedy, or chick flicks. Rarely do you see mind f**k movies and it is rarer to see good ones.
This is just my opinion, but I feel like many people hate the movie since it was so "mainstream" and many people loved it.
I remember when everybody and their moms starting watching "The Big Lebowski." Several people who had watched it when it was simply a cult hit started trashing the movie a bit.

Not trashing Inception. Just saying where it stands.
All Nolan movies will be mainstream from now ( actually the trend started already ). He is a big shot now, so highly unlikely he will be involved with other type of material.

- The Batman trilogy, Insomnia, Memento are linear (Memento is in reverse, but still linear)
- Prestige and Inception both jump back and forth, past and future, dream/reality constantly. This is what makes them unique because this jumping is not just a plot device, it actually enhances the story.
