Off course then you have bestskinsever and zagg that you should wait for 50% sale
The benefits I feel I'm getting from a matte protector (again, perhaps your friend used a particularly bad one; all I know is I bought 6 for $2.95, and I'm completely satisfied with the quality) outweigh any downsides. And really, the downsides are minor. For a few dollars, I'd suggest trying a matte screen protector once.
Also, perhaps the fogginess you mention is when the screen is off. Matte screen protectors do make the display glass almost seem frosted, but I think that actually looks much better than reflective fingerprints, and the effect doesn't stop me from being able to read these Slickdeals comments when viewing the desktop version of this page fully zoomed out. Clarity is still very much there.
By the way, why is this a deal? Screen protectors sell for $1 on eBay all day long.
I got a matte protector, and I am not a fan of it. It makes me cringe when I rub my fingers across it. It also reduce the crispness of the display and now if looks slightly frosted. I do not know, maybe the shiny ones do have problems. I do notice that I do not see fingerprints very much, so that's a good thing.

That's a good deal right now.
Of course after new years these will be very cheap on eBay, like all the others (ie: 25 cents)
In regards to other posts about the need of a protector:
While I have heard of people who have never gotten a scratch even without a protector, I have yet to actually see a scratch free device that was not either in a protector or in a closable-cover case and babied. But I am sure they are out there.
Perhaps corning has different production runs and vary quality, but I would never use one without a protector (or at least a close-cover case).
One side benefit with protectors is that if you HAVE scratches, it makes them invisible (except for insanely deep ones).
For me the biggest downside to a protector is that they are not as slick to the touch (though the screen is every bit as responsive).
- I prefer buying on Amazon cause its more secure and they usually ship with tracking #'s

So my 5 will start out with a protector on it - as did by old 3GS
