1.5) If you are switching from POTS to Obi or other voip services, in many states the old phone line will remain active for calling 911. You just leave your phone connected and they disabled outgoing calls at the phone company computers.

After having Blackberry's call 911 from your pocket - because they wanted to, I personally hate the idea of any device supporting 911 services. The last thing I want to do is accidentally call the cops.

Most cable providers use power from the pole, so the cable goes out if the power does, even with a battery.

I use http://simonics.com/gvgw/ to trunk Google Voice to my phone system, though they currently have closed to new registrations. I don't know when they will open it back up; they have closed and re-opened the sign ups before.
