When you say generic? The picture on the site shows a white box but with the iPod picture on the front. I do want to give this as a gift as well but don't want it to have a plain white box with nothing on it at all!

An 8GB fills up pretty fast. I would always recommend getting the next highest capacity you'll think you'll need.

Yes it does and for it's size, it's fairly decent.

So what accessories do I need to get to go with this for my 10 y.o.? Some type of protective case? anything else?

Creative is well thought of for their quality sound. I have a few Creative mp3 players and I can vouch for their sound quality. Not impressed at all by Apple...although, it is compressed music.

When I got my refurbed iPad3, it had "refurbished" on the box (in very elegant silver print).
Not sure if the same holds true for the iPods, but it would not surprise me.

I wound up returning the iPad3 as economic situations dictated I no longer had the extra money...but that's another story.

I would get a case to protect the back and keep it shiny and pretty. I'm not a fan of screen protectors, but it's probably warranted. You can get all these things relatively cheaply anymore. I would just search Amazon and read the reviews. Since Apple changed the docking/charging port on the new Touch, you're going to see very good deals on speaker docs and such. I would recommend better ear buds too...the Apple ones are bad and for under $10 you can find much, much better ones.

its in a white cardboard box that says "IPOD" on it.
refurbished on the side of the box
and serial number/model number on the bottom.

Hmm .... Really wanting to get this for my daughter but don't want the packaging to look all plain and say refurbished on it or something.

Not that that's a huge deal considering the product itself should be fine but who want's to get a gift that says used and fixed basically.

Not sure now what to do.
