Received on 14-Nov-12, with IOS 5.1.
***Update*** They are selling this on Ebay: http://stores.ebay.com/Refurbishe...34 I was not charged tax with this deal. I was charged tax when I ordered from the Apple store (yes I bought 2 of them). I live in Seattle, WA. According to the info on Ebay these come with a brand new battery and the previous OS (that would be iOS 5 or maybe 5.1 according to the guy who posted above). They basically look and work brand new with quality inspection done by Apple.

A used smartphone can do everything your smartphone can do but make calls and I bet you can make call on skype, maybe google voice. It just works for them on wifi. I know they can text if they have a wifi connection. And the GPS units still work! You can actually use the GPS without cell service. Think of all your smartphone can do, your kid can do almost all those things on wifi.

It takes a little research on assigning the phones to carriers down the road, I know people do it because some of the phones on Ebay even with bad ESNs say they can be flashed to pre paid/other carriers. I'm not up on the details of all of it because I'm too cheap to use a smartphone on a plan myself. I just went the smartphone as replacement for android player route after I discovered the hard way that my son's iPod Touch was disposable. A smartphone also has a better processor than an android player.
I actually tried to fix his iPod Touch first. I bought a battery and took it apart which is hard. I tried to solder in a new battery which is also hard, it's three tiny connectors. It failed. So I bought him an iPod touch with a bad home button and changed the digitizer with home button myself which was not super hard but tricky. It didn't fix it, the defect was probably in the main board and an iPod Touch with no home button is worthless to use.
So I went the Smartphone route Especially nice are free android apps and 25 cent sale apps. My 13 old spent a couple hundred dollars at the iTunes store, this saves him a lot of money.
Will the 8 GB suffice? Right now my kids have Sansa mp3 players and I only dumped about 100 songs on them. It drives me nuts Apple charges so much for a memory dump when expansion cards are so cheap.

8 gigs is ok for awhile, they'll fill it up, I know my 13 year old was bumping the memory limit on a regular basis before his battery died. He just had an 8 gig.
On Ebay, a Samsung Galaxy III S is going to be over $150 but a Viper which is great for a kid is under $100 even in near perfect condition. Consumer Reports has a list of top rated phones, you can compare that list to prices on Ebay. If you aren't using it as a phone, it doesn't matter which carrier. All my kids have Sprint phones but our actual phones are US Cellular.
Cowboom lists condition but it depends. I got two grade 5 phones and they look really good. YMMV, if you want it to look new, Ebay is probably the way to go. When I did my search, I found the LG Viper is one of the best deals for the money on Ebay. It only has 2 gigs built in but can take up to a 32 gig micro SD card.
Some guys are even changing operating systems and changing the programming but this is beyond me. I do think it' s interesting that the GPS can work without cell service. A portable GPS is about $60 on it's own. There are sites that talk about what to download, free apps to use for the GPS geo-caching, maps, etc.
How would I even introduce him to these gadgets?
