Received on 14-Nov-12, with IOS 5.1.
***Update*** They are selling this on Ebay: http://stores.ebay.com/Refurbishe...34.c0.m322 I was not charged tax with this deal. I was charged tax when I ordered from the Apple store (yes I bought 2 of them). I live in Seattle, WA. According to the info on Ebay these come with a brand new battery and the previous OS (that would be iOS 5 or maybe 5.1 according to the guy who posted above). They basically look and work brand new with quality inspection done by Apple.

Maybe the 8gb is a good idea, because he's young and if something happens to it, not as difficult to replace.
Argh!!!...then there is the Nexus 7 tablet. I just don't see as many kid friendly apps on google play vs. itunes.
You may now exit the inner workings of my brain ; )
While the SD card slot and removeable battery are great features to have, there are just too many great apps that arent available for Android. I only listed a few, but I have a whole list of them actually. This caveat is much easier to accept when you have never had a taste of the app store. You can't miss what you've never had.
While GPS positioning does not require an internet connection, any application that utilizes the GPS, wether it be navigation, maps, or something like Yelp, will require an internet connection. Maps and other data are pulled from the internet, and are not saved on your phone.
An iPod Touch, or your suggestion, a non activated Android smartphone is little more than a device to run apps. So for me, i'd rather stick with the platform that has better content to offer. I could name a dozen apps that I was disappointed to find Google Play store not have. And when I switched back to iOS, I couldnt think of any must have Android apps that weren't available for iOS.
As I mentioned my 4 yo has age appropriate electronic toys and it hasn't seemed to hurt his development. Compared to others in his preschool he stacks up pretty well. But an iPod, tablet or similar is a few years away. And a dedicated video game system? Never if I have anything to do with it. Heck I just got my first laptop a few months ago (have had a desktop for years I'm not a complete technophobe).
Right now he is looking at some books and also playing with his cars and trucks. No TV on. He watched his 40 minutes of educational shows earlier. Maybe after dinner he'll get one or two more shows. But I think we are outliers, at least based on the SD community.
Or you could buy him something he would actually use.....like an iPod.
The electronics are more of a filler in between the bike rides, baseball games, etc. not the headliner. I get what you are saying, but there is more to the story.

I don't want to come off as disparaging anyone's parental skills, just saying that one needs to balance the gadgets with the physical outdoors. Appears to be what you and others are doing..pretty refreshing!

Here's a question for anyone who might be able to answer:
What is the best version of iOS for this device, iPod Touch 8GB? Or another way of putting it is, is there a reason to avoid latest iOS 6?
