I understand your question. Next year? I don't know. I'll think about it then, but I'm guessing he'll be asking for a cool dirt bike. I don't think it's about getting them things that compare from year to year. He has wanted an ipod touch for a long time and he pulls up the website and looks at the white one and shows me every so often. For $129 it's something I know he's going to really like. I try to get them things they will really use rather than just a bunch of "stuff", even though that means they only get a few gifts at Christmas rather than tons of things to unwrap.

my 11 and 13 year olds got HP touchpads last year for Christmas that I got during the firesale. At 11 and 13 they are old enough to understand when I told them this was a one-time special thing because I got such a good deal, and next year is back to your regularly scheduled Christmas gifts. Both of them have ipod touches they saved for and bought with their birthday and christmas money they got from grandparents). I don't plan to upgrade either of then anytime soon with the latest and greatest. They should be happy they have what they have.

You do realize that you're just feeding the addiction? Children are so bombarded by electronic programming that their attention span is highly distorted. We are living in a society where we are so plugged in that the minute we are unplugged or away from out stimulus, we start to suffer withdrawal symptoms. We are all guilty, be it television or computers or smartphones, and now portable tablets.

Go ahead and delete the unused apps. Unless your games are over 1gb, there's plenty of room for apps. Videos and music collections is another story. I have over 300 apps on my iPad 16gb and it's slow going through all of them. Theres still 2gb free. I've got another 200 in iTunes that I should just delete, but keep around.

Yep then I would steer you towards the tablet direction. More money yes but the ease of use with the bigger screen makes a world of difference. For us at home we will reach for the tablet much more than the touch or even my phone.

I have our IPAD linked to my accounts so I get my emails on it just like my phone etc. More apps on the IPAD than on my phone too. We also take the the pad on any trip more than about 45 mins (we travel for soccer) so it gets a fair bit of use. It was also super handy on vacation when I had to use it to log into my office and remote control my desktop from where we were staying to deal with a few things.

Plus watching movies on a 10" screen vs my 4.5" S2 screen?? No contest.


For a tweener/teenager though I would do the touch (assuming they have no cell phone already) as a small portable device that they can take wherever they want is a better choice than the tablet IMHO. Plus our tablet is multi-person use whereas the touch is just my daughters.

LOL! My hubby and I have old TracFones and the only gaming system we own is an xbox(and a sega genesis from the early 90's-premarrriage and kids) We don't own any ereaders and such. This is all new to me.
My 10 y.o. will be getting it for xmas and that's it for her, other thna Katniss barbie and some nail polish. We try not to spend over $150 for each child at xmas(we have 3) but as they get older that's hard to do

Big time thanks. This is replacing a 1st gen 8gb touch which has been a great (but not enough space) jukebox in the car. I was waiting for a deal alert on the new 16gb nano but this will be even better! More space!
