good prices but it looks like it's all for the 1-year-autorenewal, meaning if you don't cancel they'll attempt to ding your card again (and since it's amazon, you most likely have a card on file so they will charge it.).. just a heads up for anyone thinking these are similar to the discountmag deals (since I don't think those auto-renew)

Once on the Popular Mechanics Amazon page, see "subscription options" in orange colored print. There you can click on the $5 offer without the auto renewal option.

Thinking of ordering espn for my nephew for Christmas. Has anyone had problems with the auto-renew (ie. turning off auto renew and charged anyway)?

Amazon is the only place that I'll order "auto-renew" mags. To cancel the auto-renew, you go into your Amazon account and click on 'Manage Magazine Subscriptions" and cancel the auto-renew for the corresponding magazine. I usually wait until I receive my first issue or if I'm renewing, when my account is updated and reflecting the extension.

I've done it many, many, many times with absolutely no problems.

You shouldn't have any problems canceling the auto-renew on Amazon's side. However, ESPN comes with free digital access to Insider, which requires a CC# to even though it's free. I have heard of people having trouble with that auto-renewing on ESPN's (not Amazon) side. But your nephew would be setting that up with his (or parents) debit/CC#.
