It looks like all figures (Giants included) are compatible with the Giants starter packs.
But, the "Giants" figures are not backward compatible with the non-Giants version of the game.

Bought 1 of each. 9 total. Hope he doesn't have most of the ones I bought. They usually run $7 so these are a great price I think.....

Yes, there exists no Skylander that can't be used in Giants. Everything is fair game for Giants. But any Giants, Series 2, or Lightcore Skylanders are NOT reverse compatible & therefore will only work in Giants, not the original.
