If you have a question about upgrading to Windows 8, most likely it's answered in this Wiki (e.g., fresh/clean install -- people seem to be able to install to a blank drive even though you are not supposed to based on the license, FREE Windows Media Center, etc.):

About the promo credit:
- I received the $30 promo credit from the previous offer on 11/19, fewer than 30 days that Amazon had promised. This time, Amazon promises 10 days.
- I was NOT able to use the promo credit even on Amazon Warehouse Deals, let alone other 3rd parties. So the item has to be sold directly by Amazon.
- I was able to use the promo credit toward more than one order. You do not have to use all toward one single order.

I'm just a bit confused about the terms for the credit. It says it can be used on items 'shipped and sold by Amazon'. So does that mean it can be used on items fulfilled by Amazon or just items directly sold by them?
You can install Windows 8 upgrade without having a prior version of Windows installed on your PC. I wouldn't however purchase the upgrade if you don't meet the criteria of the Upgrade, meaning you should only buy if you have a copy of XP/Vista/7 as the terms state.

The same technique from Windows 7 works for Windows 8.
