I haven't given the specs on the 520 a hard look, but the $100 110HS deal looks like it was better based on the specs. From a quick glance it looks like the 110 has a faster lens and higher resolution.

Ah.., there is the big difference, 520 has a 12x optical zoom vs the 4x on the 110.

SX260 was 199.99 several places, I doubt it will go any lower than that unless Amazon has a lightning deal. Most places it is $250+ again now, last I saw this morning Best Buy still had black at 199.99 though.

Great deal on the 520, Amazon had a lightning deal for 129.99 on the 15th but otherwise this is the lowest I've seen. I've heard it's kind of "boxy" (some say ugly), so you might want to check it out more closely before buying. I also think the deals on the 110 and 320 were better deals, but if you want this model this is probably the best deal you'll find.

You had it right to begin with. The 110HS for $100 is a better deal. The 520HS is a strange beast. It wants to be higher end with it's all metal body versus plastic on the 110HS, but it's image quality just isn't there. Notice that it's a 10MP versus 16MP on the 110HS. That would not be a bad thing if it were a 10MP native sensor and thus have bigger photosites. It isn't. It uses the same 16MP sensor as the 110HS. What they do is only use the central 10MP of that 16MP sensor. Why would they do that? To get more zoom. They are cropping the central 10MP. You can do the same yourself with the 110HS and end up with a 8x zoom, the 110HS is 5x zoom not 4x so if you crop out the central 10MP the long end is 8x. The difference is that on the wide end the 110HS is a 16MP camera. The 520HS is still a 10MP camera and throws away the other 6MP.

So in many ways, the 520HS is a gimped 110HS. I rather have the 110HS and save $40.

Your right, it seems as if the difference between the lower models and this one are not worth the extra cost. After looking at youtube reviews I'm passing on this mainly due to its low battery capacity and that it only takes microsd.

I am not in a hurry for a camera but the SX230's have hit ~130$ more or less before so thats the price range I'm waiting for. Not sure if its the best pick but Canon generally shows up on slickdeals alot do you (or anyone else) have any suggestions for similar cameras to SX230/260? mainly looking for a more camera oriented with zoom and picture quality vs size and goes on sale often around this price range .

So if one wants to just take pictures on auto, would the 110 be better than the s100 (in terms of saving money)? I have been disappointed with Canon's latest cheaper models so I wasn't sure.. I bought the 300 a few years ago and it was awful.

just for clarification do not confuse 110hs to s110 becasue s110 beats 110hs and 520hs hands down.
as far as 520hs for $139 vs 110hs for $99is a tough call becasue they ar so similar only i think for many this could be worth it for more than double the zoom with 520hs having 12x optical.

I would opt for the longer zoom personally after owning a 100hs. Nice that they both can use optical zoom in video mode as pointed out below by Travar.

You can use the optical zoom during videos on the 110HS. So much misinformation about the 110HS in this thread. Seems that every post that tries to bash it is stating incorrect information.

I have the 110hs and my only complaint is that is is slow. In low light situations there is a noticeable lag after a picture is taken.
