I'd take an 830 over the non-Pro 840. Newer doesn't always mean better.

Trying to decide between hdd and ssd. The price difference is still very significant dollar per gig. I don't care too much about boot time. Is reliability much much better with solid state? Don't want another hd to fail after 2 years again.

840 is ok, but dont pay over .50/gig for TLC, huge gouge

There's not enough reliability data about the 840, but Samsung has a very good track record, they fixed their drive disappearing issue and disclosed the issue http://www.anandtech.com/show/650...o-failures and Samsung is a large company and put lots of resources into this series

There are better deals to be had, unless you absolutely need an 840 250gig drive right now for some reason

It is indeed about 1/3 of MLC drives, but when you put that in the perspective of your use case it might be more than enough of a typical lifetime for your purposes. In 10-20 years this drive will probably be considered small and slow anyways if it hasn't failed yet due to other components. Of course the failure rate of those other components is unknown at this point since it is new hardware. Whatever you get just make sure to backup your stuff.
