Back in mid-November, Walmart ran out of the 10-compartment versions of the Stack-On storage units at $2.03 each, so I reluctantly ordered them at $2.48 each from Lowe's for free store pickup. I wanted the boxes! The original thread is here:
http://slickdeals.net/permadeal/8...ge-box-red
I forgot to pick them up until today. Yeah, I know -- an elephant I'm not. When I followed the fellow who was dispatched to round up the units from the shelf, he gently pointed out that the larger, more useful 13-compartment version was on clearance for less money. Ho-ho!
Naturally, I cancelled the original order for a credit-card refund and bought four of the larger versions at $1.99 each. They seem decent enough. The original units were awfully small, and the bigger units will be more useful. I might go back for more of them. The Lowe's near the Greece Ridge Mall on West Ridge Road in Rochester, New York, had quite a few stacked up in displays. All the ones I saw were red. The picture is a bit misleading because six of the dividers are loose inside the unit and not installed. If all of the dividers are installed, you have 12 little compartments and one big compartment. I'm gonna stuff bicycle parts into my own units.
For some reason, I can't get the product page to come up on Lowe's store website, but you can see a picture of this same unit being sold by Amazon for $7.47 each:
http://amazon.com/Stack-On-SBR-13-Compartment-Organizer-Removable/dp/B000AM8BBI/
Walmart appears to have them for $6.37 each:
http://walmart.com/ip/Stack-On-13-Compartment-Storage-Box-Yellow/14958211
(By the way, I chose to list the "yellow" version's product page because it has a picture of the red version. As expected, the "red" version's product page has a picture of the yellow version. Who says Walmart has no sense of humor?
)
My Slickdeals sense is that the odds are decent that quite a few other locations will have this item for the same price. Perhaps other posters would be kind enough to indicate success or failure at finding this item at various locations around the country?
UPDATE: Credit goes to Slickdeals member fantomas for finding the actual product page at Lowe's website:
http://www.lowes.com/pd_354711-94...Id=3381352
These items were marked "clearance" on the shelf at the actual store, but the website simply lists $1.99 as the price with no special indications. Get them while they last, I guess.
UPDATE: Users of Opera may have difficulties with Lowe's quirky ordering system. If you get a "102" server error, try using a different browser such as Internet Explorer.

FROM AMAZON REVIEWER:
In the 13 bin unit, 6 of the dividers are removable. The left of center column can be open from front to back which gives a total length of 7-5/8" for longer items. There are 4 compartments, which are fixed in size. The bottoms of each compartment has curved edge which makes it easier to get smaller items out with your fingers, such as a small washer which is difficult to grab by pinching when it's at the bottom. The lid is built with ridges which close around each section of each compartment. This keeps smaller items from moving between sections as you move and carry the case around. There are two latching plastic tabs which lock the case and keep it securely closed. I am very happy with how well these work and enjoy having them. With several sizes in several colors it gives me nice options for organizing my work area.
Here's the size info on the 13 compartment organizer
Overall size is 8" wide and 8-1/4" deep x 1-3/4" tall
The left 8 sections are 1-3/4" wide and 1-5/8" deep; all are 1-5/8" tall
The right 4 sections are 1-5/8" wide and 1-5/8" deep; all are 1-5/8" tall
The larger single section is 3-5/8" wide x 3/5/8" deep; again all are 1-5/8" tall
Comment by OP: "Six dividers arrive loose in the unit. They are not installed. With them installed, you get 12 small compartments and one large compartment. Without the dividers, you have seven compartments. There is some flexibility in arranging compartment sizes. One of the undivided compartments is long enough to hold pens and pencils."

90 in stock at my local store, and 104 in the next town over. And it doesn't look like it's clearance (according to the website it seems to be the regular price). Maybe it's priced wrong?
Should be great for kids Legos, beading, etc.
Thanks

Seems to be $1.99 everywhere I check in S. Maine.

That's true about the salsa jars, but think also what a mess it would be if one of those jars happened to fall! They also aren't stackable. I agree that these seem very small. I bought 10 anyways, and hopefully I'll find a use for them. If not, I'll give them away or return them. Thanks OP.
