I guess in 2-3 months we will see 7" with 1080P and more powerful CPU tablet on the market.
Overall, I would say the best deal for Android based tablet is Nook HD+ for $199 at Staples
a couple of month back. I did comparison side by side between Nook HD+ and Kindle Fire HD 8.9.
The build quality Kindle Fire HD+ 8.9 is slightly better, but Nook HD+ has better display in terms
sharpness and color. Nook HD+ also has micro SD card that can be used to boot too different version
of Android.

Some people are just really set in the Amazon ecosystem.
But, I think a lot of people root the kindle
In all seriousness, definitely do not buy any technology right now if you don't need till the next year. Unless you know you can recover most of the sale price (eg. iPads), it's never worth it to buy the same item essentially twice.
AMD's Temash tablets also coming. Quadcore x86 with ridiculous gaming.
It has decent specs and better in some aspects (e.g., dual band wifi radio) and the mass market does not care for hair-splitting specs that geeks spout for bragging rights. Linux is very open and configurable but not right for mass adoption.
As a developer, Kindle is a better platform than Samsung or Google tablets because penetration is much higher than either of those, easier to monetize with less worries of piracy as more people already have purchase accounts with Amazon than with Google and the apps are encrypted by Amazon unlike in Google play and are pirated almost immediately.
A better device in specs is not necessarily the best devic for a consumer market, not that the HD is lagging in any serious ways except in geek circles.

the amazon ecosystem can be found on the ipad and android devices. of the xxxx amount of kindles sold my guess are 5% are rooted.
