What does "Liquid Aminos Soy Sauce Alternative" really mean?
"Liquid Aminos" is marketing term for soy sauce made in non-traditional way.
Traditionally soy sauce is made through fermentation with "koji" (brewing with special kind of molds/yeasts) of a mix of soy beans and wheat. There is an alternative, purely chemical way of making soy sauce through acid hydrolysis - the resulting sauce has different aroma/flavor from traditional soy sauce but longer shelf life. <- This is what Bragg's Liquid Aminos is. About sodium content: Kikkoman regular soy sauce has 307mg/teaspoon, Kikkoman low sodium has 191mg/teaspoon, Bragg's has 320mg/teaspoon! Definitely not "Great for vegeterians or those who need less salt in their life." Still a fair price though @ $4.73.
Does "Bragg's Liquid Aminos Soy Sauce Alternative" contain any MSG at all?
Yes, it does contain glutamates.
There are "no MSG additives" (that means no MSG was added in addition - but there is some occurring there naturally, just like in regular soy sauce). "Liquid Aminos" contains glutamate/glutamic acid that are by-product of protein hydrolysis (just like in regular soy sauce). Read more on the science of it here [wikipedia.org]
Are the soybeans used for Bragg Liquid Aminos genetically engineered? Our Liquid Aminos are third party certified non-GMO. GMO soybeans are produced by Monsanto, and sold under the brand name Roundup Ready. These soybeans are altered to resist the herbicide glyphosate, and have been available since 1995. Bragg Live Foods buys its Liquid Aminos ingredients from a combine soy operation which, in turn, buys the soybeans from numerous sources in the central part of the United States. No Roundup Ready soybeans are purchased as part of this collective method, nore are they used in Bragg products.
