Model Number STCA4000100.
Was FP in this thread at $162 : http://slickdeals.net/permadeal/8...tca4000100
These might be 5900 RPM
There have been reports that the Seagate Backup Plus 4TB series may ship as a DX0001 or a DM0001. - This should be printed on the packaging, and on the enclosure itself.
DX is 7200 RPM and DM is 5900 RPM."
Can someone confirm that this is true? <--This is true. You can see from other threads that some people got the DX (like DarnCrazy) and few others getting the DM.
This drive has been on sale at various sites recently, and the DX model has been confirmed to be the Barracuda XT 7200RPM drive - see thread/pictures here: http://slickdeals.net/f/5861790-S...st57731698

Here is a video of how to remove the drive from the enclosure:

Be careful taking the matte black portion of the enclosure apart. I broke mine, despite being careful.
For anyone worried about warranty, from what I've read on here, just tell seagate that you opened the enclosure to see if the enclosure failed instead of the drive because you wanted to retrieve your data. Sounds legit to me and people were confirming that it works. I hope this helps people.
But still does not meet my math
3tb = $90-100 max
4tb = $120-130 max
@ OP, I just ordered my 5th. Damn you! 20TB, here I come!
The drive serial number is not on your receipt, only the model number. They don't want me to buy this drive today and then another of the exact same model 9 months from now. When this first drive fails, if it is out of warranty, I could just use the receipt from the second drive to claim it is still under warranty. Every serial number has it's own warranty. That is why you can pop the drive out of the external enclosure and get warranty service on the bare drive using the serial number on the drive itself. If they kept track of which drive was in which external enclosure the drive and external enclosure would have the same serial number.

However, it does seem like an outstanding deal.
Thanks OP!
any external HD can be installed on a desktop.
You might have to format it to get the software off, but the drives are the same ones that come off the hd making line.
Looks like you can use it as internal hard drive
Also found this on newegg [newegg.com] Its the only 4tb hard drive from seagate and its not available yet

Also, on the WD I had the serials between the enclosure and internal drive did not match. In fact, the serial on the internal drive only carried a one year warranty (at the time their internal drives carried a 3 year). Essentially, they had a different serial tracking system for drives used on externals vs internals. They absolute knew that the drive I was trying to replace was from an external enclosure. Popped right up when you typed in the serial on the RMA page.
Maybe Seagates different or maybe the market has changed over the past few years. That could very well be the case. I only share this as cautionary tale. If you plan on removing this I would strongly recommend you do further research just to be sure you aren't going to lose your warranty.
