There have been reports that the Seagate Backup Plus 4TB series may ship as a DX0001 or a DM0001. - This should be printed on the packaging, and on the enclosure itself.
DX is 7200 RPM and DM is 5900 RPM."
Can someone confirm that this is true? <--This is true. You can see from other threads that some people got the DX (like DarnCrazy) and few others getting the DM.
This drive has been on sale at various sites recently, and the DX model has been confirmed to be the Barracuda XT 7200RPM drive - see thread/pictures here: http://slickdeals.net/f/5861790-S...st57731698

You might have to format it to get the software off, but the drives are the same ones that come off the hd making line.
If you're saying it can be installed in a desktop, not all external drives can.
Western Digital has quite a few drives that has the USB controller mounted directly to the drive. There is no SATA interface on it, at all. So while yes, you can install it in the machine, you would still be limited to using it as a USB drive, not SATA. Here [mpecsinc.ca] is an example.
Can you elaborate on what you mean?
yay nys sales tax
These comes with 2 diff drives. DX0001 and DM0001.
DX is 7200 and DM is 5900.
At costco, I figured out the difference on external box but you are kinda taking chance if getting it online.

Fantastic to just copy my entire 3tb drive onto this and then lock away the 3tb in a fireproof safe. $160 to backup my entire life's digital work is like getting a Corvette for $10.
Plus Buy.com sucks bigtime.
Hmmm
