With sabnzbd, sickbeard, couchpotato and plex set up, this thing is a home theater wonder. I have it running to my HTPC in the living room and a WD Live SMP in my bedroom. I was surprised that 1080p video plays flawlessly over the wireless-N network.
Photo Station is set up so I can share and view my home photos anytime, anywhere.
I use Audio Station web interface to stream my music at work, and then use the android app to stream my music in the car. Love all the Synology android apps - file access, audio, video.
For the price, it is hard to beat the features. I would like to upgrade to a beefier NAS one day, but I still have a ton of storage space on this beast.
Of course, you can just use the NAS to serve to a more powerful computer that can transcode for you and then serve up your media, but that would also mean you must have another machine on. This is not a big deal if you have your computer hooked up to your TV, but it is more of an issue if you want to use a video transcoder like Plex, Qloud, Orb, AirVideo, Stream To Me, etc... to transcode and serve up your media to your tablet or smartphone. It just means another machine must be on to do the transcoding.
If you want transcoding to be done to serve videos to your smartphones or tablet when you are outside of your home in a WAN then I would suggest that you pick up or build a server with a Core i3 processor or better. AMD also makes some good processors that are multi-core which are often particularly good at transcoding. Typically, the more cores you have the faster the transcoding, though this is not always the case. The downside is that this will require more power draw then a processor in a NAS. That is why a Core i3 based server may be the best compromise of sufficient power for transcoding and energy efficiency.
TU for price and post though!
All my friends own Qnaps so I think I'll go that way, but I'm sure both entry level 2-bay'ers (i.e. Qnap and Synology) are pretty similar.

The OS on Synology is superior. Although QNAP has come along way.
Does anybody know how to stream AVI/DivX/Mkv files to Sony KDL 52Ex700 TV using Media Server or Plex Media Server ????
Its an ARM processor so it wont transcode.
Is there any way around to stream all types of Video to Sony TV without adding a WDLive like device ??????
