If you don't need the performance, then I really recommend the Crucial M4. It is one of the most proven SSD as far as reliability is concerned. No one will argue with me on that.

Depends on what the computer is doing more than it simply being on. If it's idle 99% of the time, I doubt there would be much difference. It's all about the number of reads/writes to the SSD. (Moreso writes) If you plan on leaving your system on all the time doing SETI/Folding At Home and your paging file is on the SSD, then I wouldn't go with this model. If you're leaving it on 24x7 as a home server where it's going to be idle most of the time, (and where the SSD is merely the boot drive) then I think this is fine.

Also, Samsung makes a nice software tool that allows you to monitor its wear level, so you'll know how long you can expect it to last and you'll get a warning once it is close to wearing out.

Of course, you should be backing up your data no matter what drive it's on anyway.

My first SSD so hoping it can revive my old and slow dual core centrino laptop with WinXP

I'd like a really cheap, small SSD for the quicker boot/load times. I would only be putting windows, office, photochop, and 2-3 games at a time.

Any recommendations on finding a deal on a 40-60gb SSD that's fast by today's standards?

This is a bit overwhelming for me to read about TLC, SLC and MLC.

I am in the same boat that I want to do this upgrade but not really need this.
