Also, your numbers blows away my original theory that there may have been a bad batch. It is most likely this amended theory that is the issue.
The replacement ones also have the same leading serials
W4225
W4226
we shall see if these actually do anything other than the splash screens...
I even asked her, "so you will make sure these will work, right?" Of course she said yes.....
You must upgrade the device to the latest version and it will be in special offers
Netflix works fine.
Netflix works fine.
My serial cable came today and I began the journey of reading the forums to figure out how to un-brick this thing. I wanted to know how to do this to have piece of mind in case it goes south from a future firmware, moviesheet update or some other thing. The good news is I was able to do it. Mine was one particular problem so I don't know if I can universally repair all problems but it does seems likely that it can be done for most bricked devices.
My problem was solved by issuing the following command at the command prompt from the serial connection:
./init upgrade
What happened though is that I didn't plug in a USB with a firmware into the device so it seems to used a stored one which apparently was for the WDTV Live Plus. It appears the previous owner flashed a custom firmware for the Live Plus on this SMP and bricked it.
Anyway, after rebooting, it displayed on the screen to plug in a USB with a firmware and at that point I did so with the latest SMP firmware and it updated and work...albeit it was in French. After changing the language back to English it seems brand new.
For less that $5, I would strongly advise that you get a serial cable for this device and keep it handy.
Good luck.
