No, its not just a range extender, its a wireless adapter with extended range. You can always disable your current internal wireless adapter and plug this into the USB port and use it instead.

nah that is helpful I was more wondering about actual range and if it helps through walls and such.

It definitely helps through walls and such. My router is in my basement on one side of the house. The computer I connected this to is on the 1st floor on the other side of the house with cement underneath of it (basement doesn't extend underneath the room).

If you have slower than 5 Mbps internet or need the range then it's pretty good. Also you can crack WEP keys with this adapter as well.

Does it matter what adapter you have to crack WEP keys? Isnt it just the hacking software doing this function?

yes, works immediately after plug-in. just hover your mouse over on the right side and you'll see the connections to choose from.

These are great! My daughter took the one I used travel with because she wasn't getting full bars with her wifi card on her computer. I use it at hotels where the internet connection strength isn't good and a poor connection goes to an excellent connection. When you plug it in you will see MANY more wifi networks than what your regular cards see.

Much better option than buying a wifi repeater if you have one computer in the house that is a ways from the router.
