For the sake of safety, if no other reason, I and the others posting the facts need to correct at least the more serious errors. I'd hate for someone to be killed because they didn't know resurfacing of the rotors is required when brake pads are changed.
What you may not know is the couple of posters claiming otherwise are known for trolling mechanics and auto repair threads. That's sort of the issue - people who are not regulars in these kinds of threads may not realize they are misinformed.
Replacing the calipers every time you do a brake job??? Really??? Come on people; hearing about the rotor fiasco was enough. Now you're just being careless and wasteful; just send your money my way if you want to waste it.
On the bright side, the VW stealership wasn't being quite honest when they said "The brakes need replacing." They're fine. Looks like I'll be sending these pads back and waiting another 8-10 months before replacing the pads now.

I have a dinosaur warning whistle on my car. In all my decades of driving, I have never hit a dinosaur, so it must work
10+ cars, 20+ years of doing my own auto repairs... luck... right

The chances of the pads disintegrating all at once (after only changing the pads) and making your brake system completely inoperable is slim and in reality closer to none.
Think about it, toyota was using a hack saw to chop off 2 inches from the gas pedal to keep it from binding up! a freaking hack saw on the throttle control! oh my god, right?!?!?
The order "invoice" available in your account on Amazon site qualifies and has been accepted for past rebates.
I can tell you that in 40+ years of working on thousands of cars, I have seen and repaired the aftermath from changing pads without resurfacing rotors. Unfortunately, when the problems occur they are much more expensive to repair.
Spend some time on actual automotive forum. I actually encourage people to join and read up on thousands and thousands of diy/reviews/personal experiences. Very few will go as far as changing out the calipers like yourself for a simple brake service.

safe and proper brake job does not equal to changing rotors/resurfacing rotors/changing out the calipers every time you service your brakes. ONLY IF NECESSARY
I still have about half life left on the pads and rotors according to the last guy who looked at my car not too long ago, it's just that there's vibration when braking and the car kind of bucks right before it comes to a full stop. I have strong suspicion that this is casued by the dealer that rotated my tires. Each time after they rotated my tires the vibration became stronger. When I complained about it they very quickly told me my rotors are warped, $1200 for front brakes *ONLY* I was quoted
