The one newegg selling are NOTDD-WRT compatible. Most of us received v8.1 and no DD-WRT support since May 2012.
OpenWrt IS available for v8.1 (and other versions), including codel QoS support to reduce latency/bufferbloat. Note 841N and 841ND are the same hardware, but the D version has detachable antennas. See recent TP-Link WDR3600 threads for more details about codel and bufferbloat.
http://downloads.openwrt.org/atti...actory.bin
(firmware link is specific for V8.x but other versions available as well if you get one).
Wiki page: http://wiki.openwrt.org/toh/tp-link/tl-wr841nd (note links in the wiki are to older versions of OpenWrt, but instructions are the same)
Gargoyle firmware support for v7 and below, but not yet for v8. Support for V8+ will probably come in a future update to Gargoyle. Gargoyle is basically OpenWrt with a simplified user interface.

very good reviews.
So while I agree in principle that 5GHz offers an advantage, it's one that few can enjoy. For all practical purposes, 2.4GHz remains dominant and impossible to avoid no matter how much you'd like to consider 5GHz.
My last order of this router from newegg was version 8.1
