My Mk802 II runs almost everything. I have the Mk808 on order. What horsepower do you think you need.?
What video player do you use?
I would love one if they are really fast enough to play everything you can throw at it smoothly.

As far as the Android stick (MK802, etc) like you mention: I think they're great, as long as they're used as a front-end. I like the Raspberry Pi for the same reason, though it's obviously not as flexible. The HTPC I have planned will serve both headend and frontend duty (OTA DVR, streaming video and sending multichannel audio to my AVR). I've not yet seen anything less than a full HTPC which will do all of these without issue. Several come close, but all have some limitation, and on the more basic devices, that limitation tends to be handling flash video. Yes, that'll likely improve over time but I'm also not willing to wait until it does. I'm still considering one as an extender on another display.

If you're getting a MK808, get a PS-Vita power supply (about ~$10 on Amazon), use a dremel to break off SONY's proprietary garbage for a standard USB port and use that instead. The provided power supply in the MK808 is a POS and may result in reboots when the MK808 is running intensive tasks due to not being able to provide stable power.

I use ES File Manager + MX Player and have no problems streaming 4gb MKV files over my WIFI network.
Hope this helps.
I'm contemplating getting the Remote for my MK808 but I don't know if $35 is worth the money....
