Synology DS213Air Diskless 2-Bay Built-In WiFi NAS Server $210 + Free Shipping (expired)

The second slowest 2 bay model, but at this price worth a look from most folks.

I've been looking at Synology for a while and haven't been able to trigger because of the price point. This looks good although it's about $30-$40 above the lowest price for DS212J (roughly $170-$180 when there's a deal).

The obvious difference mentioned in the spec list are:

• 1.6 vs 1.2 GHz CPU
• DDR3 vs DDR2 RAM (both 256 MB)
• USB 3.0 vs USB 2.0
• Built-in Wireless (IEEE 802.11b/g/n)
• Slightly higher power consumption (probably because of CPU and Wireless function)

Any other good reason to get this Air version than 212J?

What would you recommend that is as feature rich as Synology? and speedier then this 1.6ghz 256ram

DSM is awesome. Very non-intimidating NAS software and easy to use.

Is it easy to setup remote backup with a FreeNAS system running at a remote friend/relative home?

The easiest way to setup remote backup is using the FREE version of Crashplan on both computers. Setup a folder to backup TO on one PC and then select the folders you want backed up on the FROM PC then click Backup to a friend. The friend reads you a code, you enter it and within minutes, the backup begins. The backup file on the remote PC is encrypted and can only be opened with the proper password. Crashplan seems like good idea if you and the remote site (friend or relative home) has a Windows PC running all the time. But how about one site has this DS213Air running 24/7 and the remote site has a FreeNAS running 24/7? I just did some search and looks like rsync may work if it is available in DS213Air also?

And if someone already setup a FreeNAS running on Mini-ITX MSI E-350 APU mentioned in similar deal like below (I was told the whole build not counting HD is like $40 something from that motherboard deal plus miniITX case w/PSU, memory which total is less than $120). Is it an upgrade for them to get this $210 DS213Air and replace that Mini-ITX system?

Thanks, returned ds212j to amazon that I paid $199 for and got this one.

Good price for a quality entry level 2-bay NAS with wireless. The ds213j will have more RAM but a slower speed (1.2Ghz) and no wireless (uses $30 adapter).

Crashplan runs on Linux, FYI. It might make for a nice remote approach if you can run crashplan alongside the NAS system both on a PC. But I would imagine it couldn't be a dedicated NAS OS but rather NAS running on top of close to plain vanilla Linux.
