Best Bank Bonuses and Promotions (June 2021)
Opening the best high-yield savings account or one of the best money market accounts is a good move when it comes to your financial stability. Having somewhere safe to store your money and potentially earn interest on the account balance is one of the first steps in setting yourself up for financial success.
But why open a personal checking account or a savings account when you get nothing in return? After all, banks should be competing for your business. As a result, there are lots of big bank bonus offers for new customers who are willing to try a new financial institution.
Bank bonuses are a risk-free way to earn money with your unused cash. However, earning bank bonuses for opening personal checking accounts and savings accounts does take effort, especially when you’re working with multiple banks. This guide to bank bonuses can help you hit your goals and stay organized.
Axos Basic Business Checking: $100
Axos Bank is an online bank that offers both personal and business banking products. You’ll earn $100 when you open a new Basic Business Checking account by June 30, 2021 and keep an average daily balance of at least $5,000 for the first three months.
The new funds must be new money, which means if you already have an Axos Bank account, personal or business, you can’t simply transfer money to this one to make your initial deposit.
While the account doesn’t have a minimum balance requirement, you do need to meet one to get the bonus. Other perks of having the account include no monthly fee, unlimited domestic ATM fee reimbursements, up to 200 free transactions per month and more.
It’s important to note that there’s a $50 fee if you close your account within the first 180 days from account opening. Read our full review of Basic Business Checking.
Axos Business Interest Checking: $100
If you’ve incorporated your new business after June 1, 2020, you can earn a $100 bonus when opening a new Business Interest Checking Account. Just use promo code NEWBIZ100 on your secure online application. Business must be incorporated after June 1, 2020 and application must be submitted before 11:59pm on June 30, 2021 to qualify.
Additionally, in the first two months after account opening, the average daily balance of the account must be at least $2,500 in order to qualify for the $100 bonus.
Business Interest Checking offers an impressive APY of up to 0.81% on your deposits. Here’s how the tiers work based on your balance amount:
- 0.81% if your balance is between $0 and $49,999.99.
- 0.50% if your balance is between $50,000 and $249,999.99.
- 0.20% if your balance is $250,000 or more.
The account’s monthly maintenance fee is $10, but you can get it waived if your average daily balance is at least $5,000. Read our full review of Business Interest Checking.
Aspiration Bonus: $100
Aspiration is an online bank that offers incredible benefits on two different tiers. And for a limited time, you can earn a $100 cash bonus when you open an Aspiration Spend & Save Account and fund it with a deposit of $10 or more. Then you’ll need to make at least $1,000 worth of transactions with your debit card in the first 60 calendar days.
Note that $1,000 in net purchases is required. So if you spend exactly $1,000, then get a refund on a purchase for $50, you’ll need to make up that amount with more purchases to ensure your bonus. Once you’ve met the requirements, you’ll receive the money in the form of a statement credit within 120 days of account opening, as long as your account is still open and in good standing.
As with any bank account bonus, the $100 will be considered interest income, so expect to receive a 1099-INT form from Aspiration so you can claim it on your tax return. Read Slickdeals’ full review of the Aspiration bonus.

Frequently Asked Questions About Bank Bonuses
How Do Bank Account Bonuses Work?
Many banks and credit unions offer introductory bonuses to incentivize people to sign up for a new personal checking account, money market, spending account or savings account. Depending on the financial institution, we’ve seen bank account bonuses ranging from $50 to $1,000. They’re often offered through limited-time promotions, both for checking accounts and savings accounts, and the requirements to earn one can vary. Here are some of the things you may have to do to earn one:
- Spend a certain amount on your debit card within a certain period.
- Sign up for direct deposit and meet a minimum deposit requirement.
- Deposit a minimum amount of cash and hold it there for a set timeframe.
- Make a minimum number of bill payments from your account within a set period.
Because there are so many different ways to earn a bank account bonus, you can pick and choose the accounts that you can earn easily. Plus, there’s usually no hard inquiry on your credit report like you get when you apply for a credit card. Instead, banks typically only require a soft pull on your credit report. However, bank accounts do get reported to ChexSystems, and if your ChexSystems report shows too many recent accounts, you may get denied.
Additionally, many banks may only allow you to receive one new checking account-related bonus per calendar year.
How to Avoid Monthly Fees?
A monthly maintenance fee is a fee charged by a financial institution to a customer if certain requirements aren’t met. For example, some banks may charge a monthly maintenance fee if your account balance is under a certain threshold.
Monthly fees aren’t common with credit unions, but they’re pretty standard with major banks. As you compare bonus offers, look at the account’s fee structure to determine how much you’ll actually earn. For example, new customers may get a $100 bonus on an account with a $12 monthly fee. What’s more, if you close the account within six months, you’ll forfeit your bonus.
If you can’t find a way to get that monthly fee waived — which is often possible — your actual earnings from the bonus minus the monthly fees are just $28.
A service fee is a fee charged to customers for something specific, such as a bank charging a service fee for using an ATM that’s not part of its network or a vendor charging a maintenance fee for making a payment with a credit card.
Also, remember that bank account bonuses are taxable as interest-bearing income. So remember to watch out for 1099-INT forms when you get ready to file your tax return.
