HBO Max is finally here, with a massive library of content just waiting to be streamed. The only problem is that nobody seems to know what devices you can actually stream it on, which is causing a lot of frustration and confusion among subscribers.
While HBO Max officially launched on May 27th, the HBO Max app is still unavailable on many streaming devices. This includes all Roku and Amazon Fire TV devices, which account for roughly 70% of the streaming device market. To make things worse, the HBO Max app is also unavailable on 3rd generation and older Apple TVs. This is a massive barrier to entry for many potential viewers, but there is some good news.
Even though many devices don’t support the HBO Max app, there are a few workarounds that will allow you to access HBO Max content on some of these devices. Some may require an extra subscription on top of the $14.99 a month price tag already associated with HBO Max, but these are some of the only ways to watch HBO Max on select devices.
We’re breaking down which devices can access the HBO Max app, as well as workarounds to stream on other devices.
Streaming Devices that Support the HBO Max App
If you have a 4th generation or newer Apple TV, you’re in luck. The HBO Max app is currently available on newer Apple TV models, giving you instant access to the entire HBO Max library. Unfortunately for those with a 3rd generation or older Apple TV, those devices will not be receiving the HBO Max app, and the existing HBO GO and HBO NOW apps will be decommissioned as well.
The HBO Max app is currently available for iOS devices, including iPhones and iPads. You can download the app directly from the app store.
Android users can download the HBO Max app on their smartphone or tablet directly from the Google Play store. If you have a Google Chromecast, you can cast HBO Max directly to your television using Google Chrome and an android device.
Xbox One owners can download HBO Max directly from the Microsoft Store. The app grants access to the full HBO Max library and allows for instant streaming with a subscription. You must have an Xbox Live account to access this app.
HBO Max is available for the PS4 via the PlayStation store. A PlayStation account is required to stream HBO Max.
Samsung Smart TVs
Most Samsung Smart TVs from 2016 on are compatible with the HBO Max app, which can be downloaded from the Samsung app store directly on the TV. You can see exactly which of their devices are compatible with the HBO Max App here.
How to Stream on Devices Without the HBO Max App
While not every device supports the HBO Max app, there are a few workarounds that can hopefully get you streaming in no time.
Get HBO Max on Roku via Hulu
If you have a Hulu account, which starts at $5.99 a month, you can access HBO Max on your Roku device without the official HBO Max app. All you have to do is subscribe to HBO Max as an add-on to your Hulu subscription.
After that, you’ll be able to access HBO Max content via the Hulu app. The HBO Max add-on costs an additional $14.99 a month, which would bring the total monthly bill to $20.98.
Get HBO Max on Roku via YouTube TV
YouTube TV subscribers can purchase an add-on subscription to HBO Max for an additional $14.99 a month on top of their monthly subscription cost of $64.99. With this add-on, you’ll be able to access HBO Max on a Roku device by using the YouTube TV app.
This is a pretty pricey option, coming out to $79.98 a month. However, YouTube TV grants you access to live streams of dozens of channels. This is also one of the few ways to try HBO Max for free, as the YouTube TV add-on includes a 7-day free trial subscription.
Get HBO Max on Amazon Fire TV
Even though the HBO Max app isn’t officially available on Amazon Fire TV devices, there’s a way to download the Android version of the app directly to your Fire TV stick. The process is called sideloading, which is just a fancy term for downloading an app outside of the official app store. It’s a bit complicated, but there are sources that break down the process step-by-step.
And make sure to set up a Deal Alert and we’ll let you know if HBO Max subscriptions ever get a discount.
