It wasn’t that long ago that most airline rewards credit cards offered a welcome bonus that was merely worth a single domestic flight in economy class. But the market for travel rewards credit cards has been so competitive, that most now offer enough miles for two domestic round-trip tickets. Yet the competition among small business credit cards is now so fierce that you can earn even more miles.
The CitiBusiness® / AAdvantage® Platinum Select® World Mastercard® is currently offering new applicants 70,000 bonus miles after spending $4,000 within four months of account opening. To see how incredible this offer is, let’s take a look at the seven most valuable uses for these miles.
1. Two Round-Trip Tickets to the Caribbean
As winter temperatures plunge across most of the country, an island vacation starts to sound like a better idea every day. Not only does American Airlines offer an extensive round network to nearly every destination in the Caribbean, but you can go there for as little as 15,000 miles per person, each way.
So, for just 60,000 miles, two of you could be soaking up the sun before you know it. And, during off-peak travel times, that number can drop to 12,500 miles per person, each way. Those times are September 7 to November 14, and April 27 and May 20. Another option is one first-class ticket for 25,000 miles each way.
2. Two Round-Trip Tickets to Mexico or Central America
As with flights to the Caribbean, you can fly south of the border for as little as 15,000 miles normally, and 12,500 miles during the designated off-peak travel times. This includes not just Mexico, but all of Latin America as far south as Panama. As with flights to the Caribbean, you could also choose a single first-class ticket for 25,000 miles each way.
3. Two Round-Trip Tickets to Alaska
Now is a great time to start planning a trip next summer to the last frontier, and two of you can get there with the miles you earn from the CitiBusiness/AAdvantage Platinum Select World Mastercard. For only 15,000 miles per person, you can get a one-way ticket to Alaska from anywhere in the lower 48 states. And if you’re going it alone, consider flying in first class for just 30,000 miles each way.
4. Visit South America
With the miles that you’ll earn from this card, all of South America will be within reach. Northern countries like Colombia, Peru and Ecuador are only 20,000 miles each way, and just 17,500 off-peak from January 16 to June 14, as well as September 7 to November 14.
At those prices, you could get two off-peak round-trip tickets. Southern South American countries like Brazil, Argentina and Chile are 30,000 miles each way, but there are no off-peak fares.
5. Visit Europe
For just 60,000 miles, round-trip, you can book an award ticket to Europe on American and its OneWorld partners, such as British Airways, Iberia and Finnair. Just watch out for transatlantic flights operated by British Airways, as they can contain exorbitant fuel surcharges that can sometimes approximate the cash price of a ticket. But if you cross the pond on American Airlines and connect in London to a British Airways flight, it isn’t so bad.
6. Go to Asia
All of Asia is just 35,000 miles round-trip, including China, Japan, Thailand, Vietnam and Singapore. You can get there on American or partners such as Japan Airlines and Cathay Pacific. Prices are even lower during designated off-peak times, which vary by destination. For more information, see American Airline’s award chart.
7. Fly First Class
Sometimes you have to treat yourself, especially on an all-day trip across the country. Domestic first-class tickets on American Airlines can be had for as little as 25,000 miles each way, so you can easily treat yourself to premium service on your next domestic award flight.
