American Express Gold Card Benefits

American Express Gold Card Review

American Express Gold is a high-end travel rewards credit card. Every purchase earns you American Express Membership Rewards points, a valuable and flexible travel currency.

With this card, you earn 4x points per dollar on restaurant and supermarket purchases. Restaurant rewards are unlimited and apply worldwide. The supermarket bonus is valid for U.S. supermarkets and up to $25,000 per year (average of over $2,000 per month) in purchases. You earn 3x points on flights purchased directly with airlines or through Amex Travel and 1x everywhere else.

You can redeem points for flights, hotels and other travel purchases through the American Express portal or transfer to travel partners for even more lucrative redemption options. You can use the card outside of the U.S. with no foreign transaction fees.

American Express Gold Card Annual Fee The comes with a $250 annual fee, though credits for this card add up to $220 per year if used to the fullest extent. Plus, you get Membership Rewards points and other useful benefits. More on that below.
American Express Gold Card Credit Score The card is designed for those with good to excellent credit scores.
American Express Gold Card Credit Limit High-credit borrowers can receive very generous credit limits.

If you already spend at least $10 per month on Grubhub and up to $100 in credits with your favorite airline to cover incidental fees like checked bags, this card is custom-tailored to your specific needs. Even if you don’t, however, the 4x rewards on dining and supermarket purchases make this card very lucrative for people who enjoy frequent travel.

While a $250 annual fee may feel like a lot to stomach, when you add up the statement credits, sign-up bonus, benefits and statement credits, this card delivers serious value. If you love cooking, restaurants and travel, this is the card for you.

American Express Gold Card Bonus

New users can earn a bonus of 35,000 Membership Rewards points after $4,000 in purchases in the first three months. Assuming an average redemption value of two cents each, that 35,000 point bonus is worth around $700 toward travel.

Remember, you can move points to partners like British Airways (a partner of American Airlines), Avianca LifeMiles (partner of United Airlines) or move points directly to Delta for a great value on domestic flights.

If you use the points well, 35,000 is enough for a round-trip in the U.S. with points leftover or a single international round-trip to Latin America or the Caribbean depending on how you book.

American Express Gold Card Annual Statement Credits

Some of the bigger benefits of this card come in the form of statement credits. After qualifying purchases, you get a credit to your account that effectively wipes the purchase away, up to certain limits. Here’s how it works: The card offers a $10 per month statement credit (up to $120 per year) at participating partners like Grubhub, Seamless, Boxed and restaurants such as The Cheesecake Factory, Ruth’s Chris Steak House and participating Shake Shack locations.

Grubhub

Order the food you love to be delivered right to your door. In my experience, $10 is about enough for the delivery charge and tip.

Seamless

Similar to Grubhub, Seamless provides online food ordering for takeout or delivery from local restaurants.

Boxed

Buy in bulk online with Boxed. Shop wholesale products such as groceries, household products and health supplies. Get delivery service right to your door.

Dining

The Amex Gold Card also offers credits at The Cheesecake Factory, Ruth’s Chris Steak House and participating Shake Shack locations.

Free ShopRunner Membership

Cardholders receive a complimentary ShopRunner membership for free 2-day shipping at over 100+ online stores. Enroll at shoprunner.com/americanexpress.

American Express Gold Card Travel Benefits

If you think of yourself as a foodie, this card could be perfect for your spending habits. With accelerated rewards at restaurants and U.S. supermarkets, you can quickly earn enough points for a food-inspired trip to Italy, France or anywhere else in the world.

Hotel Collection Receive available room upgrades and a $100 credit for eligible spa, dining or resort activities when booking more than a two-night stay through The Hotel Collection from American Express.
Travel Collection Enroll in the Travel Collection by Travel Leaders Group and get access to travel discounts and amenities when booking flights, hotels, car rentals cruises and tours.
Foreign Transaction Fees The Amex Gold Card does not charge foreign transaction fees.

Airline Credits

Choose one airline and get up to $100 back for incidental charges. That covers things like checked bag fees and in-flight purchases.

Between the dining and airline credits, you can get $220 back on purchases you may have made anyway. If that’s the case, your annual fee is effectively just $30 per year. That’s a bargain for a card with 4x rewards on groceries and dining!

Travel Rewards

If you spend an average of $1,000 per month on food, you’ll bring home 48,000 points per year. That’s about enough for two domestic plane tickets.

Families who do a lot of cooking can also do well with this card. As your kids eat you out of house and home, at least you’ll earn rewards for a free hotel weekend away when you drop the kids off with grandma and grandpa for a few days.

  • Earn 4X points per dollar spent at U.S. supermarkets
  • Earn 4X points per dollar spent at restaurants worldwide
  • Earn 3X points per dollar spent on flights booked through Amex Travel

Adding in the 3x rewards rate for flight purchases made directly with airlines or with Amex Travel you can earn some serious rewards points for spending that you already do. Remember, don’t spend extra just to earn more credit card rewards.

American Express Gold Card Lounge Access

Unfortunately, the Gold Card does not offer complimentary lounge access. However, the popular The Platinum Card® from American Express does offer access to airport lounges through its complimentary Priority Pass, as well as a collection of Centurion Lounges.
