Review: Dell’s Latitude 7320 Detachable Combines Thoughtful Design with Powerful Versatility

Venturing into the hotly-contested detachable segment, Dell decides to pull out all the stops.

Not so long ago, Microsoft’s Surface lineup basically had the detachable PC market all to itself. The Surface Pro served as the defacto standard bearer, while more affordable options like the Surface Go brought Surface’s sleek looks and modularity to a wider audience.

Of course, becoming a segment leader quickly put a target on the Surface’s back. Competitors like HP and Lenovo have been working diligently to make inroads here with various innovations. And not one to be left out of the party, Dell has its sights set high with the new Latitude 7320 Detachable, aiming at customers looking for sharp aesthetics and potent performance in a highly portable form factor.

The result is a compelling high-end option that merges proven design elements with a few new tricks of its own. But it’s a combination that doesn’t come cheap. Can the Dell Latitude 7320 Detachable justify its premium price tag? Let’s find out.

A Hybrid for (Nearly) Every Occasion

The two share common traits in their kickstand design, 3:2 aspect ratio, magnetic keyboard, and overall excellent build quality. While both can do a serviceable impression of a laptop at one moment and a tablet the next, the Latitude 7320 Detachable does an admirable job of setting itself apart in several key areas.

At its core, the Latitude 7320 Detachable is a 13-inch tablet with an integrated kickstand that can open to a maximum of 170 degrees. Beyond its colorful and bright 13-inch, 1920 x 1280-pixel display and all-metal chassis, the 7320 comes packing some serious horsepower. Configurations include hardware like the Intel Tiger Lake-based Core i7-1185G7 CPU, dual 1080p cameras, and up to 16GBs of memory.

Other features, like the cleverly integrated fingerprint reader and a stylus that charges in just 30 seconds within the keyboard charging slot, bring in elements that make the Latitude 7320 Detachable compelling in its own right, rather than just serving as a Surface alternative. In addition, Dell Optimizer software learns users’ habits and dials in the machine’s behavior to improve performance and battery life.

The 7320 is clearly aimed toward business use though, rather than serving as a true do-it-all machine. Evidence for this comes by way of things like Intel’s vPro processor, which is onboard regardless of configuration, to improve security and make remote management easier. Additionally, the available Intel GPUs provide enough grunt to handle typical office tasks, but will struggle to keep up with the demands of graphics-intensive games.

One of the benefits of this no-nonsense approach is that the Dell comes loaded with Windows 10 Professional and very little in the way of bloatware. It’s clear that if you’ve got work to do, this 2-in-1 is ready to get down to business. That mentality is a bit of a double-edge sword in other aspects, however, as a headphone jack and two USB-C ports on either side of the device are the only means of physical connectivity available here.

Dependable Performance

Our tester was configured with the Intel i7-1180G7 (4 Core, 12M cache, base 2.2GHz, up to 4.6GHz) CPU, 16GBs of RAM, 256GBs of solid state storage, and integrated Intel Iris GPU with 16GBs of memory. Whether you’re browsing the web, watching YouTube, using office applications, or creating a masterpiece in Paint 3D, it’s a configuration that will make short work of just about any task outside of hardcore gaming.

The backlit keyboard is a quality piece of hardware, offering a satisfying amount of key travel. Its traditional layout also does a good job of minimizing that cramped feeling that’s often associated with 2-in-1s.

However, the touchpad doesn’t quite escape that fate. While it is smooth and responsive, real estate is limited and we needed to increase the cursor speed to make good use of it. Those with larger hands will likely be contending with its outer edges more often than they’d prefer.

Videos look especially sharp on the Latitude’s display, boasting vivid colors and no shortage of brightness. The 1080p webcam is another highlight here, producing accurate colors and a surprising amount of visual detail even in low light.

As you’d expect from a tablet form factor, the speakers have a tough time producing any meaningful low-end response and sound tinny when things get loud, but they remained fairly clear even at higher volumes.

Should You Buy The Dell Latitude 7320 Detachable?

Although the lack of high performance GPU options ultimately limits the Latitude 7320 Detachable’s use outside of an office environment, it has more than enough muscle to handle the typical demands in a work setting or during casual personal use. Paired with a sharp display and thoughtfully integrated features, it delivers a premium user experience that matches its look and feel.

But the cost of entry reflects the Latitude’s high-end aspirations, as well. The 7320 starts at $1,559 with an i3 CPU, 4GBs of RAM, and 128GBs of storage. It doesn’t include the keyboard and stylus though, which command $199 and $69, respectively. Our tester rang up for $2,496.92 when all was said and done, making the Latitude 7320 Detachable one of the pricier options available in this segment.

However, we’d consider this to be a situation where the additional cost is justified. Putting your best foot forward rarely comes at a discount, and those seeking a 2-in-1 with plenty of processing power wrapped in a well-thought-out package will find a lot to like about the Dell Latitude 7320 Detachable.
