Dell continues its widespread adoption of the newest USB-C port with the release of a premium monitor that allows for a video, power and data connection through a single cable.

It’s an innovation that has enhanced the way that laptop users in particular integrate their portable workstation into the home office. But that’s not all the Dell UltraSharp 27 4K USB-C monitor has going for it.

With a high-resolution display, crisp colors and HDR support, it places a heavy focus on delivering pristine, accurate colors. At 27 inches corner-to-corner, this screen is an excellent choice for a wide range of users, including creative professionals, console gamers, and even those who like to watch 4K movies at their desk.

One Powerful Port

All-in-one USB-C connectivity is the big selling point of this monitor. The port, which is located on the back of the monitor, allows you to connect a laptop to provide video, data and recharging power simultaneously through one single USB-C cable.

Video and data work for desktop PCs, as well. However, this one-cable connection only reaches its full potential when coupled with a laptop that is compatible with USB-C video out and charging, such as the XPS 13.

Simply connect your laptop to the monitor using the provided high-speed USB-C cable, and you’ll get a 4K video connection for extending your desktop to the big screen as well as a high-speed data connection. It’ll also charge your laptop at the same time, providing up to 90W of power.

The data transfer element means that the Dell UltraSharp’s four other USB ports (three USB Type-A and one additional USB-C) can serve as convenient extra connections for memory devices and other peripherals.

Home office users can say goodbye to bulky docking stations, port adapters and even the need to plug in their laptop charger. The monitor handles all of this. And it does it with the utmost elegance.

A Focus on Color

The display itself is a high-quality IPS-type panel, which is the preferred display tech for photo and video editing because of its accurate color delivery. The screen boasts 99% sRGB and 99% Rec 709 color coverage, as well as 95% DCI-P3 color (which Dell says is 25% more color space than sRGB).

Other specs include 1.07 billion colors and a contrast ratio of 1300:1. These are all impressive numbers that will make techies smile. And if all of that means very little to you, just rest assured that you can count on this display to provide gorgeous imagery and wide viewing angles.

This makes it an ideal choice for professionals who work in the arts and graphics space. It’s also a viable option for console gamers looking for a high-quality 4K 60Hz panel to use with the PlayStation 4 Pro or Xbox One X.

HDR is also fully supported, with an HDR400 certification. But with peak brightness of around 350 nits, this screen isn’t quite capable of delivering the sort of startling spectacular highlights that make HDR special.

All of the Essentials

The UltraSharp 27 benefits from the latest in Dell’s well-established design language, which stays fairly consistent across its current line of display offerings.

Thin bezels surround the display on all four sides, doing away with the thicker bottom lip that was prominent on monitors of recent years.

The monitor is held aloft by a relatively compact base stand, with a square footprint that provides stability for the screen without taking up too much desk space. The all-grey matte finish matches the rear of the display chassis. This lends the entire device a very clean, mature look that’s perfectly suited to an office environment.

The base is fully articulated, allowing for a wide range of tilt, swivel, pivot and height adjustments. Additionally, full portrait mode is supported. However, it would be nice if Dell could tune the pivot points to be a little more compliant. Height adjustments require so much force that they can be abrupt. You also have to use a second hand to brace the stand and prevent it from moving with the screen when attempting swivel adjustments.

Power and menu input buttons are located on the lower right edge of the screen. Handy on-screen prompts show you which button does what as you navigate the simple and intuitive on-screen menus.

While most of the ports are on the back of the chassis, there is a USB Type-A port and a second USB-C port located on the left edge of the display, providing extra-convenient access. Be aware, however, that the side-mounted USB-C port doesn’t support video throughput.

Should You Buy the Dell UltraSharp 27 4K USB-C Monitor?

At $579.99, this is not a monitor for casual users. Dell is targeting productivity professionals with this display, delivering a wide color gamut and excellent picture quality with factory calibration out of the box.

It does, however, come with a more consumer-friendly price than some of its competitors. Ultimately, the big sell is the powerful USB-C port which, when paired with a modern laptop, provides unrivaled convenience via a single-cable connection.

Of course, a high quality display at this size also makes for a great viewing experience no matter what’s on the screen. Not to mention all the usable pixel real estate from the native 4K resolution.
