Even though this is the most conservative configuration in the Inspiron 15 7000 lineup, it still checks off all the right boxes for a capable gaming setup, particularly in the graphics department with its NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 GPU.
Featuring NVIDIA's innovative Max-Q Design Technology, the GTX 1060 helps this compact machine deliver optimum performance with minimal heat generation and power draw — it's largely the reason why we can call this a true gaming laptop, and not a gaming-inspired device, like many others on the market.
Made for Gaming Enthusiasts
At first glance, the Inspiron 15 7000 gaming laptop looks unassuming with its matte black finish and thin design. But closer inspection reveals cleverly-hidden front and rear thermal vents that shroud large-capacity heat exchangers and dual cooling fans — a clear sign that this machine was created with performance as a top priority.
A glossy red Dell logo on the cover along with red accents on the keyboard and track pad give off an athletic feel and also hint at the power within. When in use, the chiclet-style keyboard comes to life with red LED backlighting.
For those who need to expand the system with accessories or additional monitors, the Inspiron 15 7000 comes with plenty of high-speed connections: USB 3.1, Thunderbolt 3 port, HDMI 2.0, ethernet, and more.
Other thoughtful design features include an integrated fingerprint reader on the power button, front-facing long-throw speakers, a gesture-enabled precision touchpad, and HD webcam with dual array mics.
With a timeless form-factor and aesthetic, the Dell Inspiron 15 7000 Gaming laptop is a perfect fit for both a professional workplace as well as the game room.
Big Performance Potential
A 7th Gen Intel processor and NVIDIA graphics card work together to produce stunning visuals at 60 frames per second (FPS). We installed our usual suite of test games — Forza Motorsport 7, Destiny 2, Overwatch, and League of Legends — and every single game ran flawlessly on high graphics settings.
While living, working, and gaming on-the-go with the Inspiron 15 7000, we did notice something very interesting: the laptop delivers maximum performance when plugged in, but restricts games to 30 FPS when running on battery power.
This mode of operation is intentional though — playing a game is very power-intensive, and the graphics card throttles itself in an effort to not damage the battery or deplete it incredibly fast. From our research, most mid-range gaming laptops behave in this same manner, so if you want to get more out of your games, be sure to always have the charging cable. You'll probably also want a decent carrying solution because the charging cable includes a sizable external power supply. We tried changing every Windows and NVIDIA setting we could find, but this power-saving function could not be disabled. For those wanting unrestricted on-battery performance, look to the Alienware line of laptops.
It's worth noting that the small form factor of the laptop means the dual fans will be continuously working to dissipate heat, and depending on the game you're playing, it could result in varying levels of audible fan hiss. Playing a graphically-intense game like Destiny 2 caused the fans to spin at maximum speed, and it sounded like the laptop was going to take off with flight. This small issue is easily solved with headphones, but any nearby companions may be quickly annoyed.
Overall, the gaming experience on the Inspiron 15 7000 matches what you'd get from a gaming desktop or console — fast and powerful — with the added freedom to enjoy your games anywhere. Don't forget to purchase a gaming mouse if you plan on playing fast-paced first-person shooters.
