How to Shop for Cheap Kids’ Clothing Online

Keep your little one decked out in cute clothes on the cheap.

Shopping for kids’ clothing can be tricky, even for the most seasoned Slickdealer. You’re constantly dealing with growth spurts, school dress codes and your child’s own ever-changing likes and dislikes. While you may not be able to predict how fast your little one will grow or what styles he’ll like next year, there are some things that can make shopping for kids’ clothes a lot easier. We’re offering up some helpful tips for finding cute kids’ clothes for less — and sharing how to score the best deals at some of our favorite online retailers.

Shopping for Cheap Kids’ Clothes

Cheap Baby ClothesShopping for Cheap Baby Clothes (0 to 2 years): Babies outgrow clothes fast, and it’s hard to predict what size your little one will need at any given time. For example, not all newborns can fit into newborn sizes and not all 6-month-olds wear sized 6-month clothes. You’ll want to avoid buying things too far in advance unless they can be easily returned or exchanged. The good news is you don’t have to worry about durability at this age since your baby will outgrow everything before it’s worn out. Babies between 12 and 24 months tend to slow down a bit in terms of growth though, at which point it’s a bit safer to stock up on cheap baby clothes when you find a good deal.

Shopping for Cheap Toddler Clothes (2 to 5 years): Toddlers tend to grow in height at a rate of two to three inches per year, which means you’ll likely need new pants and long-sleeve shirts every year. Keep this in mind if you’re buying for the next season. Additionally, toddlers tend to fall down a lot, often ripping holes in the knees of their pants. You’ll want to balance the need for new sizes every year with the need for decent quality. On the flip side, shorts, t-shirts and skirts can often be worn for at least a full year, maybe even two — as long as they’re durable enough to hold up to a toddler’s rough and tumble lifestyle.

Shopping for Cheap Kids’ Clothes (6 to 10 years): Kids start keeping clothes long enough during this age to wear them out relatively quickly. Because of this, you’ll want to invest in more durable, high-quality pieces. You should also consider school dress codes before you make any clothing purchases.

Here are some additional shopping tips to consider:

  1. Cheap Kids' ClothesShop off-season. One of the best ways to score great deals on kids’ clothes is to take advantage of end-of-season sales. You’ll score the biggest savings on warm-weather merchandise like t-shirts and shorts in July.  Coats, boots, sweaters and other cool-weather essentials are highly discounted in January. You can either buy your kid’s current size for short-term wear or size up for next season. The exception to this rule is shopping for cheap baby clothes since sizes are harder to predict.
  2. Stick to unisex styles. Hand-me-downs are a way of life for most households, and that makes unisex clothing a slick investment. Many retailers like Kohl’s and Target have entire categories of unisex baby clothing in basic designs and neutral hues.
  3. Buy second-hand. thredUp and eBay are both great places to find new and gently used kids’ clothing. These sites also allow you to sell your unwanted pieces, so you can de-clutter while you save. Check out our Consignment Shopping Buying Guide for more helpful tips on buying second-hand.
  4. Shop in the middle of the week. One survey of more than 100 retailers showed that Wednesday is the best day of the week for children’s clothing sales, with an average discount of 40% off.
  5. Stock up on basics. Once you find an incredible deal, it’s generally a good idea to stock up while you can (especially on basics). Buy bigger sizes that your little one can grow into over the next couple of years. You can also never buy too many pairs of socks and .)underwear. (Save money by purchasing big packs of the same socks. This way they are still good when you inevitably lose one from the pair.)
  6. Make the most of back-to-school deals. End-of-season sales always have the best prices, but back-to-school sales from mid-summer through September are always worth a look.
  7. Join rewards programs. Stores like OshKosh B’gosh, Gymboree and The Children’s Place let you earn points on your purchases and then redeem these points for future discounts.
