Dual-screen functionality is one of the most dramatic innovations in recent laptop designs, and HP is among the first to integrate a secondary display to a gaming laptop with the Omen X 2S.
Embedded right into the main body of the laptop is a small touchscreen that lets you multi-task in new ways that are simply not possible when a single application has exclusive control of the main display.
See More, Do More
According to HP, the Omen X 2S is the first high-end gaming-focused laptop to feature a built-in second screen. The star of the show is a 6-inch, 1080p touch display integrated directly into the main chassis above the full-RGB keyboard.
At its core, the mini-display functions exactly like if you connected a second stand-alone monitor — it’s capable of extending your work space simply by dragging content off of the lower edge of the main screen. HP has also further enhanced the two-screen experience with a host of unique hardware-specific functions and applications that make utilizing the built-in display much easier.
On the keyboard is a button that instantly shifts any active window down to the small screen. This is handy if, for example, you’re watching a YouTube video and you want to quickly free up your main display for another browser tab or application while keeping your video playing below.
This feature also opens up all manner of multi-tasking potential for gamers. You could, for example, follow along in real-time a video walk-through of a game — play the game on the main screen while watching the tutorial on the lower screen. Or duke it out in Apex Legends or Quake Champions on the top screen while using the second screen to monitor your Discord chat.
The Omen Command Center application, HP’s hardware monitoring tool, has even been specifically optimized for the smaller display, and automatically switches to a touch-friendly user interface when placed on the lower screen, allowing you to keep tabs on your system loads and temperatures while in-game.
Custom Screen Mirroring
For games and applications that don’t have native dual-screen support, HP has designed a screen mirroring feature for the Omen X 2S, which lets you re-cast any portion of the main display down onto the mini screen.
So, for example, if you’re playing a shooter like Battlefield V, which has a small map in the corner of the main screen, you can mirror that portion of the screen onto the second display, making the map larger and more easily readable.
Omen X 2S Specifications
At the base price of $1849,99, the Omen X 2S is powered by an Intel Core i7 9750H CPU and a powerful GeForce RTX 2070 Max-Q graphics card with 16GB of RAM.
But those with the need for more processing power can upgrade to a Core i9 9880H CPU and a GeForce RTX 2080 Max-Q. RAM options top out at 32GB and internal M.2 SSD can be increased from a 256GB to a huge 2TB. The screen can also be up-fitted with a 4K IPS display, or 240Hz panel for extremely high refresh rates.
The inclusion of RTX graphics cards means the Omen X 2S can run cutting-edge special effects including ray tracing and DLSS (Deep Learning Super Sampling – a new advanced form upscaling) – in games like Battlefield V and Shadow of the Tomb Raider. Meanwhile, the main display’s G-Sync capability synchronizes its refresh rate to perfectly match a game’s current frame rate.
The 20mm thin chassis also packs a gaming-oriented keyboard, featuring per-key RGB lighting control and clicky 1.5mm key travel. On-board audio is provided through dual speakers by Bang & Olufsen, and supported by HP Audio Boost software, which the laptop maker says improves audio volume.
Gaming laptops often need to dissipate lots of heat, and HP has fitted the Omen X 2S with a dual-fan heat pipe system that is enhanced with a premium-grade liquid metal thermal paste from well-known brand, Thermal Grizzly. This thermal paste helps to improve the transfer of heat from the processors to the heatsinks, and Thermal Grizzly’s liquid metal products are a favorite amongst hardcore desktop PC gamers.
