Designed for Versatility
Microsoft’s Surface Book line innovates in the laptop space with a design that has remained relatively unique in the hybrid laptop market.
The detachable screen is a self-contained tablet device, which can be attached to a keyboard base that itself contains additional processors and a bigger battery. So you get a fully functional tablet that, when attached to the base, delivers all the performance of a traditional laptop.
More Power Under the Hood
With new 10th generation Intel Core processors, the Surface Book 3 delivers significantly improved performance over previous models.
An Intel Core i5 sits at the heart of the small and light 13.5 inch model, paired with 8GB of RAM, Intel Iris graphics and 256GB of RAM. This is upgradeable to a Core i7 processor and an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650 discrete graphics card, for those in need of extra horsepower and 3D rendering capabilities.
Meanwhile, the faster Core i7 chip is included as standard with the 15 inch model, along with a GeForce GTX 1660 Ti graphics card, providing enough power for more demanding rendering and the best gaming performance yet seen on a Surface laptop.
Both models can be configured with up to 32GBs of RAM, and solid-state drive upgrades top out at 2TB on the 15 inch model.
Better Battery Life
More modern processors means more efficient power consumption, and that has enabled the Surface Book 3 to deliver the “longest battery life of any Surface,” according to Microsoft.
When attached to the base, the 13.5 inch model can achieve operating times of up to 15.5 hours of active use and “modern standby,” says Microsoft, with the 15 inch model capable of up to 17.5 hours of use.
Battery life is obviously more limited when using the Surface Book 3 in tablet mode, but the included charger, which normally attaches to the base, can also be plugged directly into the tablet portion allowing for extended use on the go.
The screen on both models are bright, 3:2 aspect ratio panels, with 1600:1 contrast ratio and 10-point multi-touch capability. The 3000 x 2000 resolution of the 13.5 inch model is increased slightly to a full 4K 3240 x 2160 resolution on the 15 inch version.
Surface Book’s Signature Look
From the exterior, the new Surface Book 3 maintains a design that will be familiar to current Surface Book users, with a full size keyboard, top-mounted 1080p webcam with Windows Hello sign in, an 8mp camera on the rear and full compatibility with accessories like the Surface Dock 2, the Surface Pen and the Surface Dial.
On the sides of the base you will find two USB Type-A ports, which have been updated to the 3.1 Gen 2 standard for significantly faster transfer speeds over the previous model. These are joined by the more modern USB-C port, and an SD Card slot.
Bigger power supplies are also included with both models of the Surface Book 3, which will help speed up recharge times, and the power brick comes with an additional USB charge port built in, perfect for charging your phone alongside the laptop.
