Red Dead Online is now available as a standalone game for players who don’t already own Red Dead Redemption 2. You can pick it up on all platforms for just $4.99 until February 15th—at which time it will jump to $19.99. Best of all, the game is backwards compatible with both PS5 and Xbox Series X.
While a press release from Rockstar confirms Red Dead Online’s sale price, at the time of this writing the discount is not displaying on the PlayStation Store. If you’re playing on PS4 or PS5, we recommend waiting for this issue to resolve, or just going whole hog and getting the Ultimate Edition, which is on sale for almost $70 off through most of December.

Rockstar’s press release also mentions you’ll still need either a PlayStation Plus or Xbox Live Gold membership in order to access the game on consoles. There will also be a way to upgrade your copy of Red Dead Online to a full version of Red Dead Redemption 2, although a specific price wasn’t announced.
It’s a surprising move by Rockstar, albeit one we probably should have seen coming. Red Dead Online is nowhere near as popular as GTA Online–a game that has taken up most of Rockstar’s time lately, much to the chagrin of the RDO population.
This transition to a standalone title might be a way to bolster the online community’s player count, bringing in people who otherwise wouldn’t have dropped $60 on Red Dead Redemption 2. Red Dead Online is also full of cosmetic microtransactions and having more players on the server means there’s a better shot of someone dropping cash to purchase a virtual cowboy hat.

Best Deals and Discounts on Red Dead Online

Regardless of Rockstar’s motivations, the promotional price of Red Dead Online makes it the perfect time to jump into the wild west and explore a new frontier. If you’re the type of person who likes to run around wreaking havoc in open-world Rockstar games with no regard for the story, this is your moment to save.
