Pre-COVID, Amazon Prime Day was an amazing opportunity to score deals in the middle of the summer. However, this year has forced Prime Day (October 13th and 14th) and Black Friday to be just weeks from each other, making shoppers wonder which sales they should focus on.
When it comes to Amazon Prime Day in 2020 versus Black Friday deals that usually take place after Thanksgiving, we’re here to help. We have broken down which items to snag during the Amazon Prime Day deals and which sales can wait for Black Friday markdowns.
Prime Day is an exclusive event for Prime members, but if you’re not a member at the moment, there are still plenty of ways to save. First of all, you can sign up for a free 30-day trial of Prime. Just set a calendar reminder to cancel before you’re charged for your first month if you don’t want to continue enjoying the benefits of Prime. Most people end up keeping the membership, though. Secondly, Prime Day has largely become a nationwide shopping event with plenty of competitors jumping in on the action. Look to Walmart, Target and Best Buy to possibly match or beat Amazon’s offerings, although Amazon will always have the best offers for its own line of products, like Echo speakers and Kindle e-readers.
Is Black Friday Canceled?
Like most of the events this year, holiday shopping in 2020 will look different than previous years. Many big retailers, like Walmart and Target, have announced that they will be closed Thanksgiving Day, and we wouldn’t be surprised if in-store Black Friday shopping is canceled too.
We predict that many stores will switch from a huge one-day sale to many online sales and deals leading up to the holidays. You should expect more online shopping competition over hot deals. It is also wise to plan for shipping or production delays as the holidays draw closer.
What to Buy During Amazon Prime Day
Amazon announced 60+ new products, including an Echo Show that swivels, a Ring Drone and car cam for added security perks. While most of Amazon’s new products won’t be discounted or ready to ship until after Prime Day, this will be a good opportunity to purchase older Amazon products for 50 to 70% off.
If you are in the market for Amazon’s new tech models, you can expect to score free services, like a trial of Unlimited, for shopping on Prime Day. In past years, Amazon has also offered trade-in promotions on new products — last year, shoppers were allowed to trade in their old Echos for a 25% off coupon that could be stacked with an existing Prime Day deal.
Tech and gaming deals
Finding new game console releases for either Prime Day or Black Friday will be almost impossible, so try to get on the pre-order list as soon as possible. For other hot gaming deals, buy them during Prime Day to ensure you receive the gift in time for the holidays.
Struggling to get your hands on a Chromebook? Any Chromebook deals launched during Prime Day will go fast, so don’t keep it in your cart too long.
Last year, Amazon offered up to 30% off on Amazon-brand household goods, including paper towels and toilet paper. This year, expect similar deals especially on Amazon’s toiletries and pantry goods like coffee, supplements and skin care.
Prime Day is also an excellent time to find discounted Fitbits and fitness trackers. We expect to see the Fitbit Ionic, Versa and Inspire for up to $50 off. But Amazon might not be your only option — Best Buy and Target typically price match fitness tracker deals during this time.
Traditionally, the toy deals get better the closer we get to December 25th. However, if you are worried about shipping or inventory delays on popular toys, Prime Day is a good time to buy. Past Prime Days have offered up to 50% off Melissa and Doug toys, up to 30% off LEGO sets and up to 30% off on popular brand toys such as Star Wars and L.O.L.
What to Buy During Black Friday
Whether you need a bedding refresh or a brand new sofa, Black Friday will offer you better deals than Prime Day. You can expect discounts on Instant Pots, KitchenAids and air fryers during Amazon’s Black Friday sale. But don’t forget to look at competitors for even more savings since stores like Kohl’s and Macy’s have had better deals on bedding, kitchen gadgets and decor in the past. For instance, Kohl’s has been the winner for Black Friday kitchen appliance discounts because of their Kohl’s Cash incentives on top of the discount.
Fashion and clothing
With many of us staying home more often, clothing is not at the top of our shopping list this year. Expect 60-70% off certain fashion brands and clothing styles on Amazon and other competitors’ sites during Black Friday. If you can wait to buy winter clothes and winter gear, you can score an even bigger discount at the end of December.
Subscription boxes and digital goods
Make gift giving easy this year with a digital gift or subscription box. Save even more by finding subscription boxes that discount their first month or offer a bigger discount when you opt for a 6-month or 12-month subscription. In the past, we have seen popular subscription boxes and digital services have sales on Black Friday and Cyber Monday. While some companies offer a slightly better discount on Cyber Monday, many companies just run the same sale from Black Friday to Cyber Monday.
Amazon has over 300 subscription boxes to choose from — most with a discount taken off your first box.
TV and computer deals
If you need a TV or computer as a Christmas present, then don’t wait until Black Friday to shop. However, if you don’t mind the possibility of an eight to 10-week delay, Black Friday will be the opportune time to save big on 2020 model TVs and computers.
Walmart usually dominates the TV and tech deals for Black Friday, but we wouldn’t be surprised if Best Buy and Target stepped it up this year. Set a Deal Alert for your favorite brands and models to be notified when the tech is in stock and when it’s on sale. You can also set a Deal Alert for general TVs or computers with “Frontpage” selected so you are notified immediately if a hot deal hits the internet. With over 12 million active Slickdeals community members, let us help you find a great deal.
Holiday shopping 2020 is not what you expected, but with the help of the Slickdeals community and our app, you can find the best Prime Day and Black Friday discounts without leaving your house.
