Five VPN Services Popular With the Slickdeals Community

If increasing internet security has been on your mind lately, we've got tips on finding the best VPN service at an affordable price.

A VPN, or Virtual Private Network, is a service that allows you to connect to a server and run your internet activity through an encrypted “tunnel.” With a VPN, your Internet Service Provider (ISP) and anyone else who might monitor your network connection (hackers, businesses, etc.) aren't able to see some of the specific details of the data passed through your connection.

So, why would you want to use one of these services? Well, even though it is illegal to provide specific personal details, ISPs are allowed to sell and share aggregated data surrounding the activity of subscriber IP addresses. While a VPN may not give you completely private internet access, it's a step in the right direction if you want to maintain as much of your internet privacy as possible. These services have grown in popularity recently as legislation surrounding internet privacy has been in the news, so we looked at the top trending VPN provider deals on Slickdeals to break down which one may be right for you.

1. NordVPN

Best Deal: $72 for 2 years or 3 years for $99

This deal from NordVPN is very popular among our community. They're offering two years of VPN service for $72 (use coupon code GET75OFF), or three years for $99 (use coupon code OLYMPICS). NordVPN features include:

  • Access over 3,194+ servers worldwide
  • No logs policy
  • Connect 6 devices at the same time
  • Ultra-fast Servers For Video Streaming
  • Onion Over VPN
  • Double Encryption

If you're not happy with the service, they offer a 30-day money back guarantee.

2. Windscribe VPN

Best Deal: Free (50GB per Month)

There is nothing better than free when it comes to a deal, but, of course, there's usually a catch. The limits for the Windscribe VPN free service include a connection on only one device, no OpenVPN configurations (sorry Linux users), and only eight regional IPs. The normal free plan also limits your monthly bandwidth to 10GB, but this Slickdeals code will upgrade your free account to a pretty substantial 50GB per month.

Alternatively, you can get Windscribe VPN 1-Year Pro Subscription for $10.45, 3-year for $12.37, 5-year for $22 or even a lifetime subscription for $37.95. use coupon code MMSAVE at checkout.

Any good VPN service should have a clear Privacy Policy explaining how your information is tracked. Thankfully, the folks at Windscribe go into detail about how they track users at each step of the process. They even use an anonymous aggregate for tracking user activity, and they do not require any personal information beyond a username and password.

3. Private Internet Access VPN Service

Best Deal: $59 for two years of service

Private Internet Access is a popular VPN service with a recent promotion offering a two-year deal at $59 (normal cost for this service is $79.90.) You'll get access on up to five devices, with more than 3,000 servers in 25 countries and no bandwidth limit. Plus, it works across all major OS platforms.

The Private Internet Access service has a somewhat vague privacy policy, but does state what info they collect and that it will not be given to third parties beyond what they specifically mention. They also note that they scrutinize each legal request for information and “provide the user an opportunity to object to any requested disclosures.” Slickdealers who have used Private Internet Access have mostly positive reviews with only a couple mentioning that it slowed their connection a bit and a few others mentioning that some popular shopping sites like Target, JC Penney, and Best Buy have blocked some of the Private Internet Access servers.

4.VPN Unlimited

Best Deal: $18 for a lifetime subscription

If you want to avoid worrying about a monthly bill, VPN Unlimited offers a great lifetime subscription. The recent Frontpage deal that brought the price for this service down to $18 includes 5 devices connected through OpenVPN and servers in 70+ locations. The biggest concern from most Slickdealers is how long the “lifetime” of the company may be. We can’t say for sure, but VPN Unlimited and their parent company, KeepSolid seems rather reputable online and from other Slickdeals users.

In terms of privacy, the information that VPN Unlimited collects isn't much different from many other major VPN providers. They maintain encrypted information about connected devices, connection type, etc. but states that this is only used for technical purposes. This means that there isn’t complete privacy, much like many other major VPN providers but also isn't on par with the gold standard of VPNs.

Use coupon code VPNSD22 at checkout.

5. TigerVPN

Best Deal: $18 for a lifetime subscription

Another great lifetime VPN deal is this one from TigerVPN. This deal gives 64% off their services, including the VPN connection for up to 2 devices, unlimited bandwith and access to 15 VPN nodes across 11 countries. TigerVPN also features native apps for Windows, Mac, Android and iOS. The service comes with a 7 day money back guarantee. Alternatively, they offer a 500MB demo account to test compatibility.

In regards to privacy, the service does not “collect or log any traffic data or browsing activity.” But TigerVPN does use "cookies" to track how users use their website and see which pages on the site receive visitors.

Use coupon code JANBIGSAVE at checkout.

The Quest for Privacy Continues

Overall, a VPN connection isn’t going to give you complete privacy. A consistent theme in Slickdeals' forum discussions about VPN services was that any of these providers may still be sharing and profiting from your general activity; none of them will keep your information completely safe. Ultimately, though, these providers represent decent options at fair prices if you're looking to maintain a higher level of privacy from your internet provider. And getting a VPN is one of the first basic steps in the right direction, even if the service isn't perfect. Just be sure to read the privacy policy and terms closely, and check out our forums for added insight before you buy to make sure you're getting the best VPN for your needs.

It's ironic that TorGuard is on your list but Slickdeals blocks Torguard client IP addresses. Why is this? It's not cool and very annoying I can tell you that.

Although I have a free unlimited subscription with Windscribe as well I can agree why they're your #1 choice, but what would consider a/b this option here [mac-forums.com]. It looks good to me but I have been hesitating to pull the trigger.

I think you'd be crazy to sign up for these $15-$30 "lifetime" plans.

No way they are making any money unless they are doing something with your data.

Even the most expensive VPN service is not that expensive. I would rather they make a litlte money with a profitable business model than have pressures to generate revenue via other means.

The deal you linked for PIA states that it is not available for existing subscribers; a new account must be created.

I jumped on the vpn asia deal and have been pretty happy with that. Shortly after that, I realized my hosted seedbox also has vpn service as well and I end up using that one a bit more as it allows for openvpn.

I am in need of vpn service to run a mining rig at work. Was using VPN unlimited by keepsolis but it has been blocked by IT at work. Which one of these would get the job done? I dont really care about speed/privacy. Just need something to get around the firewall at work.

Uh-oh. And that's all? Pretty unfilled with actually spread among wide groups of people one. Namely, this one hide my IP [myipservices.com]. I will pin half of the list as no deal.
