Back-to-school clothes and accessories don’t have to cost a fortune — especially if you know how to shop strategically. With the upcoming school year right around the corner, we’re showing you how to get everything your children need for the year ahead with these Macy’s back-to-school shopping tips.
The Slickdeals’ Macy’s Back-to-School Shopping Guide
1. Earn and Redeem Macy’s Money
Macy’s Money works a lot like Kohl’s Cash, in that you’ll earn $10 in rewards for every $50 you spend during select savings events throughout the year.
Your Macy’s Money reward cards can be used on anything in-store or online — including brands that are normally excluded from promotions.
Just keep in mind that these rewards expire quickly and can only be used during specific redemption periods.

2. Stack Your Savings
Macy’s limits its customers to one coupon per transaction, but you can stack that coupon with Macy’s Money for bigger, better savings. In fact, you can redeem up to five Macy’s Money reward cards in a single order.
Bookmark our Macy’s coupon page to stay up-to-date on the latest coupon codes and offers.
3. Split Up Your Purchases
Shoppers can earn up to $40 in Macy’s Money in a single transaction. If you’re spending $250 or more, your best bet is to divide your purchase into smaller orders to avoid maxing out your potential earnings.
You can then use your reward cards during the redemption period to score some free back-to-school clothes and accessories.
4. Set a Deal Alert
One of the best ways to ensure you get the best back-to-school deals at Macy’s is by setting a Deal Alert.
We’ll instantly notify you about the most popular Macy’s offers on our forums, so you never have to worry about missing out on a great buy.
5. Join Star Rewards
If you plan on shopping at Macy’s more than once during the school year, you’ll definitely want to sign up for its Star Rewards loyalty program.
The Bronze level is free to join and lets you earn points on Macy’s purchases during designated Star Money Days. You can then redeem those points for future store discounts. For reference, 1,000 points = $10 in Star Money.
The best part? There are no merchandise exclusions, so you can use your Star Money on anything storewide. Just be sure to use it before it expires, as it’s only valid for 30 days.
6. Consider a Macy’s Credit Card
Macy’s cardholders are automatically enrolled in the Star Rewards program, and they get even more perks depending on how much they spend on an annual basis.
Here are the membership spending tiers:
- Silver: $1-$499
- Gold: $500-$1199
- Platinum: $1200+
In addition to 25% off Star Passes, Gold and Platinum members enjoy free shipping with no minimum purchase required. Platinum members also receive 5% cash back in rewards.
7. Use a Star Pass
Silver, Gold and Platinum Star Rewards members occasionally receive Star Passes, as well. These passes let you take 25% off at Macy’s on any day of your choosing, which is a great way to save even more during a big sale.
8. Get 40% Off Kids’ Shoes
Speaking of sales, you’ll get the biggest bang for your buck if you shop for kids’ shoes and clothing separately during special savings events. For instance, Macy’s frequently has a Great Shoe Sale with 30% off a single pair of shoes or 40% off two pairs or more.
Shopping for new clothes instead? You’ll typically find the best deals during Macy’s One Day Sales. These take place one Saturday per month and actually last 48 hours thanks to a preview day on Friday.
You can also save up to 30% off during the store’s Friends & Family Sale in April and December.
9. Score an Instant 25% Off
Looking for a Macy’s coupon code you can use right this minute? You’ll get 25% off instantly when you sign up for the store’s emails and texts. You can also get that same discount by downloading the store’s mobile app.
Macy’s gives shoppers an extra 25% off their first app order, and it sends push notifications with special offers and app-only deals. Plus, you can use the app to track and manage your Star Rewards.

10. Save on College Essentials With a Registry
If you’re shopping for a college-bound teen, you may want to create a Macy’s wedding registry. It may sound weird, but the retailer offers several registry discounts (like 25% off select home essentials, 15% off small appliances and 10% off furniture, mattresses and rugs).
You’ll also receive not one, but two coupons for 25% off women’s, men’s & kids’ fashion, shoes and fine jewelry.
11. Get Automatic Price Adjustments
Paying attention to price drops is so yesterday, thanks to Paribus from Capital One. This free app tracks your online orders and watches for price changes so you don’t have to.
If you’re eligible for a price adjustment, Paribus will help you get your refund by filing a claim on your behalf.
12. Browse Off-Season Styles at 80% Off
For especially great deals, check for markdowns more than 80% off. Most of these pieces are off-season, so you may want to size up accordingly.
13. Get School Uniforms and Activewear for Less
You’ll find competitive deals on school uniforms and activewear at Macy’s, especially during the Black Friday in July sale. Many pieces are on sale for around 60% off during this event. However, it still pays to shop around at stores like Old Navy, Gap, JCPenney and Kohl’s to see what discounts are on offer.
14. Look for a Slickdeals Rebate
At Slickdeals, we offer Macy’s rebates year-round to help our community save even more.
Keep an eye out for these exclusive opportunities (like $25 Macy’s eGift cards on purchases of $50 or more) by bookmarking our Slickdeals Rebate Program page.
15. Skip the Shipping Fees on Small Orders
When it comes to back-to-school clothes shopping, you’re probably going to surpass Macy’s $75 free-shipping threshold anyway. But if you’re placing a smaller order online for a backpack or lunch box, select free store pickup to waive any potential shipping fees.
Also, keep in mind that Macy’s regularly runs a Black Friday in July event right before school starts with free shipping on all orders with no minimum purchase required.
