work for you?
The Google Nest security system is on sale for $299 at Best Buy with free shipping. That's $100 off its retail price, so if you've been waiting for the right time to add a smartphone-compatible wireless security system to your home or apartment, this may be just what you're looking for.
The set includes the Nest Guard — which doubles (triples?) as an alarm, keypad and motion sensor. It also has two Nest Detect sensors (for monitoring when doors or windows are open) and two Nest Tags (key fobs that let you easily arm and disarm the alarm system).
Google Assistant functionality comes built-in, so you can use the Nest Guard to manage any smart devices connected to Google Home via your voice.
To top it off, the Nest security system set comes with all the screws, adhesive strips, magnets and mounting brackets you'll need to incorporate the Nest system into your home's current layout.
While Best Buy is offering a 25% discount, it's not the cheapest price we've seen for the Google Nest home alarm system, even recently. Consumer electronics site a4c.com ran a daily deal in early June that had this same setup for $243. If you need a security system right now, Best Buy's price is the cheapest currently available, but if you aren't in a hurry you might want to wait for another flash sale.
Is the Nest Secure Home Security and Alarm System Worth It?
What Does Arming/Disarming Nest Entail?
The Google Nest home alarm system offers a lot of flexibility when it comes to different ways to arm/disarm, including old-fashioned passcodes as well as the Nest security app and Nest Tags, which can be programmed to only work at certain times. That means you can give Nest Tags to people like family members or dog walkers and they'll have no problem gaining access to your house.
Does the Google Nest System Come with a Camera?
While the Google Nest package on sale at Best Buy doesn't come with a camera, there are Nest-enabled cameras available.
It's also worth noting the included Nest Detect sensors work as open/close sensors and motion detectors. You can mount them on doors, windows or walls and they'll let you know whenever anything passes by. Everything can be controlled through the Nest app and you can add more Tags or Nest Detect sensors to your setup as needed.
While it's definitely nice to have a camera, the motion sensors still let you know when something's moving in your house, so this is a good starter kit for anyone who wants a one-purchase basic home security system.
Do I Have to Pay for Monitoring?
While it's free to monitor your Nest security system yourself via the app, you can also choose to upgrade to Pro Monitoring which features 24/7 coverage from Brinks Home Security. This plan has trained professionals look after your house day and night; if there's a disturbance that seems serious, they'll contact you to confirm before reaching out to the authorities.
New Pro Monitoring subscribers are treated to a one-month free trial, after which the price jumps up to $29 a month or $19 a month with a three-year commitment.
Nest Aware is another subscription to consider. Once you're subscribed, it records everything that happens on your cameras and saves the footage for anywhere between five and 30 days. While the regular Nest package can still record notable clips for you to review, this is the best way to see everything that happens in your house, regardless of whether Nest flagged it as out of the ordinary.
There are currently three tiers of Nest Aware subscriptions. For $5 a month Nest Aware keeps the previous five days of footage, $10 a month lets you keep the previous 10 days and $30 a month gives you four weeks worth of storage space.
Since the basic Nest system does not feature a camera, you'll need to pick one up before subscribing to Nest Aware.
Related Products to Consider:
If you're not happy with the Nest system's specs and price point, other similar home alarm systems may be more in line with your budget or needs.
Slickdeals user Tnyc points out the Ring home alarm system — which often has a lower sticker price than the Google Nest — offers cheaper monthly subscription plans. However, user jaradi cautions against comparing the two systems. According to this user, the matchup isn't really apples-to-apples since the final price depends a lot on what functionality you need.
