Amazon Announces a Colorful New Echo Dot Kids Edition

Grab the newest Echo Dot Kids Edition at $49.99 for a limited time.

Introducing the new and improved Echo Dot Kids Edition.

“Alexa, keep my kids entertained.”

A new and improved Echo Dot Kids is rolling out on June 26th. It’ll cost $49.99 for a limited time, then $69.99 after the introductory period. The redesigned Echo Dot Kids Edition features two fresh color schemes — rainbow stripes and solid blue — and is reportedly 70% louder than the original version.

Right now you can get a 3rd Gen Echo Dot for $29.99. While the Echo Dot Kids is $20 more, it might be worth the extra expense since it comes with a one-year subscription to FreeTime Unlimited.

Normally $2.99 a month for Prime members, Freetime Unlimited comes with over 1,000 Audible books, songs and games. Kids can also access content through FreeTime on a tablet, Amazon Fire or smartphone.

The Echo Dot Kids Edition comes with a two-year worry-free warranty, rather than the 90-day warranty of the regular Echo Dot. For parents, that in itself may justify the cost since kids can be unpredictable.

Is the New Echo Dot Kids Edition Worth the Price?

Short Answer: At $49.99 it’s a great deal. At $69.99, it’s a stretch.

Having used FreeTime Unlimited for over five months now, it’s a worthwhile perk that normally costs $35.88 per year. If you were already planning on subscribing to FreeTime Unlimited, it’s like you’re getting the newest Echo Dot Kids Edition for just $14.11.

Buying your child the Echo Dot Kids (as opposed to a 3rd Gen Echo Dot) is also highly recommended. Right out of the box, the version for kids is better suited to curious young minds. You don’t have to worry about Alexa telling your kids something inappropriate or playing an explicit song, as it comes with several parental control options and an added layer of privacy settings.

If you’re planning on subscribing to FreeTime Unlimited the Echo Dot Kids might be worth $49.99 since it comes with a one-year subscription. While you can buy a 3rd Gen Echo Dot for $29.99 right now, if you add on a FreeTime Unlimited subscription your total comes to $65.87, or $15.88 more than the Echo Dot Kids Edition.

However, once the Echo Dot Kids’ price jumps up to $69.99 you should think carefully before investing in one. If you value the expanded parental controls and fun color scheme, it might still be worth it, but otherwise it’s cheaper to get a regular Echo Dot — maybe your kids can grow into it?
