Hot on the heels of the recently announced Apple Arcade, Google is introducing its own app subscription service called Google Play Pass. For $4.99 a month, you gain access to hundreds of paid apps for free. On top of that, the applications are ad-free and (the biggest kicker) in-app purchases won’t cost a thing.

For a limited time, Google has an introductory offer that allows you to enjoy Play Pass for $1.99 a month for the first year. After that, it will roll back to its normal $5 a month, but you can cancel anytime. If you are curious about the service, you can also try it out free for 10 days.

Is Google Play Pass Worth It?

If you find yourself often killing time on your smartphone and have purchased apps before, then this is absolutely worth it.

While the Apple Arcade only features games, the Google Play Pass also offers useful apps like TouchRetouch ($1.99) and Dictionary.com Premium ($3.99). With over 350 apps on the roster currently, the service isn’t just fun and games, it could really give your productivity a boost as well. Play Pass will be updated with new content every month, so you might get lucky if there’s an app on your wishlist.

The Google Play Pass can also be shared on up to six devices, so the entire family can get in on the action. With a nice list of family-friendly and educational titles like King of Math Junior, it can keep the kids engaged and educated. Since the apps are fully unlocked with no in-app purchases, you won’t be ambushed with an extra $500 on your cell phone bill.

With the average survey netting 30 cents on Google Opinion Rewards, you can easily cover this guilty pleasure at the discounted $1.99 each month. Even at its regular monthly price, all it takes is 17 surveys to keep your subscription going.

While Google Play encompasses music, books, TV shows and movies as well, it is not part of Play Pass, unfortunately. But who knows, there could be a possibility that the company will release an “Ultimate” package in the future that is all-encompassing.
