In honor of the 2020 summer Olympics, Japan Airlines is giving away 50,000 free flights to incoming international visitors. While each ticket is roundtrip, the giveaway is only good for domestic travel for residents outside of Japan, as a way to increase tourism in lesser-known parts of the country. This basically means you have to be in the area already for the games.
To enter, you can apply directly on the airline’s website. When submitting an application, choose a departure location, day, number of people and time slot. Then, the site generates a list of four possible destinations. The lucky winners will be notified exactly where they’re headed within three days of applying.
Note, contestants must be part of the Japan Airlines loyalty program — known as JAL Mileage Bank — to participate. If you’re not a member, sign up today, as applications open late February 2020.
The travel period for the contest is between July 1st to September 30th, 2020, which naturally fall around the dates of the Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics. Also, flights will only depart from the Tokyo and Osaka airports, and there’s a limit to the number of applications along with route searches per day. For those who don’t want to fly solo, it’s possible to apply as a group of up to four people.
Even though this deal won’t get you to the Olympics and back home, it’s exciting to have the option to extend your Olympics adventure and explore Japan. As an island nation, getting around can be difficult and expensive. For instance, roundtrip flights from Tokyo to Sapporo can cost nearly $800 in July and Osaka to Nagasaki during September is around $600. Best of luck and here’s to hoping you win a free trip!
